Our Finished Product from today's project: Documenting How to Make Sonsorolese Traditional Food, Maalâ (Fermented Breadfruit).
It was delicious đ
The breadfruit fermented for several months. Today, we finally prepared it and learned the process of prepping and cooking Maalâ the Sonsorol way.
We'd like to thank our teacher Caroline Thomas, our supporter Quintina Nestor for providing the Maalâ and our chefs Eric Kintoki and Reng Ngirakesau.
Sonsorol Cookbook is also on our goals list. We are always open to supporters, sponsors and donors to help us achieve our goals in preserving our Sonsorol language, customs, practices, traditions and culture. About us, The Young Historians
We, the youth of Sonsorol State, started this group â Young Historians (Wonoula Lei Hatinapa ri Faruya) â with the hope to document and preserve our islandsâ culture and traditions. Due to modernization of our country, we have become separated from our islandsâ ways of life; with the intrusion of Western way of life, we have started to veer away from our own way of life. Furthermore, because a majority of us grew up in Koror, far from our islands, we realized that we have lost touch with our own culture, and in the process, beginning to lose our identity as Sonsorolese. With this realization, we created this group. We strive to learn as much as we can about our heritage from our community elders before it is lost forever, through a collection of themed interviews.
Since the creation of this group in 2015, we have conducted various projects like collecting and documenting native plants of each of the islands of Sonsorol; compilation of information regarding funerals; and creating a calendar, where we learned the names of the months of the year, as well as the seasons, and the days of the month and many more valuable lessons associated with lunar cycle.
We will bring our projects to our community to share what we have learned and continue the cycle of learning. We hope you enjoy our projects and learn as much as we have.
