The Division of Solid Waste Management is excited to announce the launch of our household waste segregation and environmental education initiatives! Starting this March, we will be actively promoting waste segregation in residential areas in Ngatpang State and Aimeliik State, as well as in 8 elementary schools across Babeldaob Island. 🌿♻️

Our goal is to reduce the amount of waste sent to the National Landfill in Aimeliik State by promoting proper segregation and disposal practices. By working together, we can protect our environment, extend the lifespan of the landfill, and create a cleaner and greener future for Palau.

This week, we conducted productive meetings with residents, community leaders, and educators to prepare for the start of these activities. With the cooperation of International Center for Environmental Technology Transfer (ICETT), Ministry of Education (MOE), Ngatpang State, Aimeliik State and Friends of Palau National Marine Sanctuary (FPNMS), we aim to instill the importance of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) through fun and engaging educational activities.

We encourage everyone to participate in this initiative and make a difference in their daily waste management practices. Stay tuned for updates on activities, tips, and success stories as we embark on this journey together 🌏💪

WHERE DOES SEGREGATED WASTE GO IN PALAU?

"ICETT, together with the Division of Solid Waste Management, Bureau of Public Works (DSWM-BPW), has been working on segregating household waste and its discharge projects under the JICA Partnership Program.

The Weekly Resource Collection at piloted sites in Mongami, Aimeliik state, and Ibobang, Ngatpang state is operated by DSWM-BPW after residents and students segregate and discharge their waste. Collected resources such as plastic, metal, and paper are delivered to the Koror Recycle Center and private companies.

Our aim is to reduce the volume of disposed waste in the National Landfill, thereby extending its lifespan. We achieve this through the expansion of proper segregation and discharge of household waste, utilizing resource stations with waste segregation bins in the communities of Ngatpang and Aimeliik states, as well as environmental education at schools on Babeldaob Island." 😊
