𝘖𝘸𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 by Planetary Intimacies

In 𝘖𝘸𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴, Planetary Intimacies delves into the poignant narrative of disappearing landscapes and the human role in their alteration. There, we are compelled to confront the accelerated pace of geological transformation, where epochs of change unfold within the span of a human lifetime. As geological time converges with human experience, Planetary Intimacies raises deep questions about our capacity to comprehend and adapt to this shifting paradigm, inviting us to embrace a state of interconnected vulnerability.

Coraux by Marie-José Gustave

Through 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘹, Marie-José Gustave invites us to embark on a journey of introspection and empathy inspired by the captivating beauty of Guadeloupe’s shoreline – the artist’s ancestral homeland. Amidst this natural splendor, there exists a poignant narrative of displacement and resilience – a reflection of the hardships endured by migrant ancestors and the universal plight of those fleeing conflict, economic turmoil, and persecution.
Porcelain loops, carefully inserted amidst the weaving process, serve as poignant reminders of turbulent waters of history and memory, symbolizing the enduring impact of trauma and the resilience of the human spirit amidst adversity.

Habitat by Chien-Ching, Hung

Habitat reimagines the creation of the essential objects of human existence – containers, clothes, and even a house – through a meticulous return to manual craftsmanship. Chien-Ching, Hung’s process encompasses everything from the careful gathering of lichens for dyeing to harnessing the natural phenomenon of wild wool felting. The final installation acts as a sanctuary of reflection, participation, and preservation. It invites us to delve into contemplation, urging us to consider the inherent qualities of old-world aesthetics, handicrafts, and nature.

Habitat by Chien-Ching, Hung

'The book, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘳 𝘉𝘢𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, provided tremendous inspiration for me, particularly the quote, "Before the tool that forces energy outward, we made the tool that brings energy home". The book proposes that before the creation of tools for killing and violence, our ancestor’s greatest inventions were vessels. Human needs led to the necessity for ‘storage,’ giving rise to creations like a net woven from hair, a basket for wild oats, and we could even consider houses as considerable containers for humans.

It is a common conception that the first cultural tools were weapons because violence was necessary and inevitable for survival. However, her narrative re-examines whether conflict, violence, and war were truly the central points of human existence. She rewrites the narrative to the beginning of humanization, using an analogy that portrays technology as a cultural container rather than a weapon for colonization. (...)'

Sea shells, particularly oyster shells, become vessels for Emma’s artistic alchemy, symbolizing not just protection and abundance but also peacefulness and the power of creation.

Oyster shells exhibit many mineralogical and geochemical properties, showcasing remarkable absorbability, exchange capacity, and a reactive surface area that renders them instrumental in both environmental and industrial applications. Notably, they play a pivotal role in the dissolution of contaminants in wastewater. As Emma Witter states, ‘The global issue of copper contamination in water sources raises considerable alarm, exacerbated by certain industries, particularly in developing countries, continuing to discharge copper-rich effluents. In response to this concern, China’s National Natural Science Fund Project has undertaken a significant investigation into the potential use of oyster shells as an adsorbent for aqueous copper. This research not only underscores the environmental potential of oyster shells but also emphasizes the crucial role of sustainable solutions in addressing global challenges related to water contamination.’
