Recently I design more magazines than newspapers

Title of EUROPEAN NEWSPAPER OF THE YEAR goes to HET PAROOL!

It's 4th award like this. It becomes almost a rule that the paper gets awards after my redesign.

Het Parool, the newspaper from Holland I redesigned a few years ago receives this award for the second time! This paper was also named WORLD'S BEST DESIGNED NEWSPAPER TWICE!

The series of pages you see here are the 'covid' covers, that break the standard front page layout saying HOLD ON to the readers during a hard time. The very brave and unusual decision for any newspaper.

This project was exceptional. Very fast, we didn't have plenty of time to discuss, so the solution must have been RIGHT from the start. Maybe that's why the simplicity of this design makes it work so well after a few years, without many changes.

Design is based on font QUARTO, which is exceptionally beautiful. Font by Hoefler&Co. was based on type by Flemish punchcutter 400 years ago. I tried hundreds of fonts but not many come even close to the impact of the Quarto. I spoke once to a newspaper Art Director John Koning – he told me that it is so easy to make any branding with this font. Any new logo for an event, sub-brand etc. You just take Quatro and it's ready.

The same story was with a website. All fonts from a newspaper were used, even body text font. So it exactly matches newspaper look and feel (parool.nl)
