Swipe to see the stunning details of these pieces. What begins as a lively day at the beach becomes a profound masterclass in abstraction. Tarasin possessed an incredible ability to deconstruct the visible world and rearrange it into a dynamic system of signs.
Through the lightness and transparency of watercolor, Tarasin makes the heavy material world feel completely weightless, showing how chaotic everyday life beautifully translates into an abstract poetic order.

✨ A rare side of Jan Tarasin you’ve probably never seen before. ✨
Known as a master of abstract pictograms and geometric codes, the iconic Polish artist surprised everyone with his 1993 masterpiece, “Samotność pony” (Solitude of a Pony). 🐴
Instead of transforming the animal into a simplified sign, Tarasin returns to pure figuration. He places a realistic pony facing us directly, suspended in a vivid, endless blue void.
But look closer. 🔍 The entire canvas is sliced by strict horizontal lines. This raster acts as an intellectual grid—filtering raw nature through a cold, mathematical order. It creates a profound, melancholic sense of alienation, showing a vulnerable living creature caught in a modern, highly structured world.
Kept hidden in his private family collection for decades, this painting is a fascinating, intimate experiment where raw emotion meets systematic control.

The series of paintings entitled “Fire”, created by Jan Tarasin in the 1970s, represents one of the most evocative periods in the career of this outstanding Polish painter and printmaker. It was during this decade that the artist fully crystallised his distinctive style, based on a fascination with the object and its transformation into a sign.
In the “Fire” series, Tarasin does not seek to illustrate the element in a literal or anecdotal manner. Here, fire becomes, rather, a catalyst for change. The titular fire is a process in which the ordered world of objects is destabilised. Fixed forms lose their contours, melt and transform into energetic points, lines and patches.
The 1970s were a period in which Tarasin moved away from the last vestiges of figurative art in favour of a philosophical analysis of existence through painting. The ‘Fire’ series is a perfect example of how the artist was able to combine compositional rigour with a powerful emotional charge, turning the canvas into a space for an intellectual interplay with the viewer.

[Exhibition view]
The numerous questions posed by the painter aim to ascertain whether the world ends beyond the horizon, whether order can arise from chaos, and whether it is enough to give space rhythm and structure. If so, would a schematic symbol or a simplified notation not suffice, rather than a complex ideogram which, after all, need not be unambiguous, descriptive or definitive? Should this scheme be based on imitating the mechanisms of nature, logical or mathematical principles, or should we simply leave it to chance or chaos?
