Decades before World War II, Germany carried out a brutal genocide in modern-day Namibia. Thousands of Herero and Nama people were executed, driven into the desert, and imprisoned in concentration camps.
Germany officially recognized it as genocide 117 years later.
In December 1952, London’s air became toxic enough to kill thousands of people while the government publicly dismissed the disaster as ordinary fog.
The Great Smog of London eventually caused around 12,000 deaths and changed environmental law forever.
In 1906, Ota Benga, a Congolese man from the Mbuti people, was displayed inside the Bronx Zoo’s primate house beside an orangutan. His story remains one of the darkest and most disturbing examples of racism and human exploitation in modern history.
