I, for one, welcome our new feline overlords. 🐾 Between opening doors and using the faucet, they’re basically just hairy roommates who don't pay rent at this point.

Nine beetles. Nine different ways to make light do something it was not supposed to do.
The metallic sheen on a scarab is not pigment. It is structure. Microscopic layers in the exoskeleton interfere with light waves and produce colors that shift depending on the angle. No dye involved. No color in the traditional sense.
The same mechanism is used in solar panels, anti-counterfeiting holograms, and aerospace coatings. The beetle figured it out first.
These nine species span Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and North America. Same family, Scarabaeidae. Wildly different results.
Cotinis mutabilis to Potosia cuprea obscura. Chartreuse to near-black. Every variation between them is a different solution to the same biological problem: be seen by the right things, invisible to the wrong ones.
