AI in Pakistan: Challenges and Opportunities for Education
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming various sectors of the economy, society and culture around the world. Pakistan, as a developing country with a large population and diverse needs, can benefit from the potential of AI to address some of its pressing challenges and opportunities, especially in the field of education.

According to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030, and Pakistan could gain up to $47 billion from this growth. However, to achieve this, Pakistan needs to invest in developing its AI capabilities, infrastructure and talent, as well as fostering a conducive environment for innovation and collaboration.

One of the key areas where AI can have a significant impact is education. Pakistan faces many challenges in providing quality and equitable education to its 220 million people, such as low enrollment and retention rates, high dropout rates, poor learning outcomes, gender disparities, teacher shortages and inadequate resources. AI can help overcome some of these challenges by offering personalized and adaptive learning solutions, enhancing teacher training and support, improving assessment and feedback mechanisms, facilitating access and inclusion, and creating new learning opportunities and pathways.

Some examples of AI applications in education in Pakistan are:

- SABAQ: An ed-tech startup that uses AI to create engaging and interactive digital content for primary school students, aligned with the national curriculum. SABAQ has reached over 1.5 million children in more than 20,000 schools across Pakistan.
- AlemHealth: A telemedicine platform that uses AI to connect rural patients with specialist doctors in urban areas, and to provide diagnostic services using image recognition and natural language processing. AlemHealth has partnered with several educational institutions in Pakistan to train medical students and professionals on using AI for healthcare.
These are just some of the examples of how AI is being used to improve education in Pakistan. However, there are also many challenges and risks associated with AI, such as ethical, legal, social and cultural implications, data privacy and security issues, human-AI interaction and collaboration challenges, digital divide and inequality concerns, and potential displacement and disruption of jobs and skills. Therefore, it is important for Pakistan to adopt a holistic and inclusive approach to developing its AI ecosystem, involving multiple stakeholders from the government, academia, industry, civil society and international partners.
AI can be a powerful tool for enhancing education in Pakistan, but it is not a magic bullet. It requires careful planning, implementation and evaluation, as well as constant learning and adaptation. Only then can Pakistan harness the full potential of AI to create a better future for its people.
