ملک ایران میں ایک ہاتھی کو نمائش کے لئے لے جایا گیا اور ایک تاریک گھر میں داخل کیا گیا تاکہ کوئی اس کو بے چراغ نہ دیکھے۔ چار شوقین رات کو ہاتھی دیکھنے آئے انہیں کہا گیا کہ یہ دیکھنے کا وقت نہیں ہے۔ مگر انہوں نے اصرار کیا کہ ہم ابھی دیکھیں گے اور بخدا دیکھ کر ٹلیں گے۔ ہمیں چراغ کی حاجت نہیں ہے جو مانگو لے لو مگر ہاتھی ابھی دکھا دو۔
چنانچہ ان میں سے ایک ہاتھی کے قریب گیا اسکا ہاتھ ہاتھی کی سونڈ (خرطوم) سے جا لگا وہ باہر آ کر کہنے لگا کہ ہاتھی نلکے کی طرح گول، مخروط اور لمبا ہے۔
دوسرا اندر گیا تو اسکا ہاتھ ، اسکی ٹانگوں پر پڑا وہ بولا میں نے ہاتھی دیکھ لیا ، ہاتھی ستون کی طرح ہے۔
تیسرے نے اسکے کانوں کو چھوا اور کہا، ہاتھی تو پنکھے اور چھاج کی طرح ہے۔ ہاں کچھ چوڑا اور نرم سا ہے۔
چوتھے کا ہاتھ اسکی پشت پر پڑا تو وہ بولا کہ ہاتھی تو تخت کی مانند ہے ۔

اگر ان کے ہاتھ میں شمع ہوتی تو ان میں اختلاف نہ ہوتا۔ اسی طرح دنیاداروں میں جو باہمی اختلاف ہے وہ جہالت کی تاریکی کی وجہ سے ہے۔ اگر وہ نورِ علم سے مستفید ہوں تو نہ لڑیں نہ جھگڑیں۔
