Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) praised folk music as primal and revelatory:
“Folk music is the original melody of man; it is the musical mirror of the world”.
In Birth of Tragedy, he elaborates that folk song embodies the Dionysian spirit: a continuously generating melody from which poetic images and words crystallize, reflecting a deeper, universal musical essence that precedes and shapes language and individual expression.
