Early antibiotic use could increase childhood obesity risk.
Giving antibiotics to babies under two years old might be linked to weight gain later in childhood. A new study shows that when kids get antibiotics early in life, they’re more likely to be overweight or even obese by the time they’re older. In fact, the research found that early antibiotic use increased the chances of being overweight by 9% and the risk of obesity by 20%. That’s a pretty big jump.
The researchers looked at more than 33,000 kids born in Finland and tracked their health over time. They checked whether antibiotics taken before pregnancy, during pregnancy, or right after birth made a difference — and found they didn’t. The real issue starts when babies are given antibiotics during their first two years. It’s not that antibiotics are always bad — they can save lives when truly needed — but the problem is how often they’re given when they’re not really necessary, especially for common things like colds or ear infections.
These early antibiotics may mess with the gut bacteria that help control metabolism and weight. And once that balance is off, it might make it easier for kids to gain weight over time. Childhood obesity is already a big concern around the world, with over 159 million kids affected in 2022. So this study is a big wake-up call. Doctors and parents need to be more careful with antibiotics for toddlers, especially when the illness isn’t serious. It’s a reminder that what we give our kids in the early years can have a long-lasting impact on their health.
