In todayโs digital age, information is everywhere, but understanding is not. A single scroll can expose people to countless claims, opinions, and headlines yet not all of them are true. The issue is no longer access to information, but how people interpret and question it.
On paper, the country shows progress: more Filipinos can read, write, and graduate. But beyond these numbers, a more serious problem appearsโwe are producing readers who struggle not only to understand, but also to verify. In a time when information is constant, being able to read is no longer enough; people must also learn to question what they read.
Recent findings from the Second Congressional Commission on Education reveal that around 18 million Filipinos have finished high school despite being functionally illiterate. In many vulnerable communities, limited access to resources create gaps in comprehension. However, the problem does not stop there. Even among those who can read, many still lack the ability to think critically. This shows that literacy alone does not guarantee understanding.
This is evident on social media. Headlines are often shared without being fully read, and claims are accepted without verification. Opinions are formed from incomplete or misleading information. Misinformation spreads easily not because it is always convincing, but because it is rarely questioned.
This became especially visible during the 2022 Philippine elections. Academic and fact checking studies documented the widespread circulation of false and misleading claims online, often shared without verification. These narratives influenced public perception and contributed to distorted understandings of political issues and candidates.
Without the habit of fact-checking, people become more vulnerable to false narratives. What they see online can quickly shape what they believe to be true. This does not remain a digital issue; it affects how people think, judge situations, and make decisions in real life.
The consequences are serious. In a democratic society, the ability to think critically influences how citizens choose leaders and respond to national issues. When decisions are based on misinformation rather than understanding, the impact goes beyond individualsโit affects the direction of the country.
This is why literacy alone is not enough. What the Philippines needs is not just more readers, but more critical thinkers. Education must go beyond teaching people how to read and instead focus on helping them analyze, question, and verify information.
In the end, a society that reads but does not question is a society that can easily be misled. If people continue to accept information without understanding it, they risk making decisions that harm not only themselves, but the nation as a whole.
The real danger is not illiteracyโit is the illusion of literacy.

โIt feels great kay finally makapahuway najud from different responsibilities na school-connected. At the same time sad kay some of my ateโs and kuyaโs sa ITED LSG kay 4th year na, so wala na sila sa office next year.โ

There will be days
when the world feels too heavy to hold,
when even getting out of your bed
feels like lifting mountains with bare hands.
Days when the sky looks dull,
when silence grows loud,
when your own thoughts
forget how to be kind.
But look closely,
flowers still bloom after storms.
The ocean still returns to shore
no matter how many times it is pulled away.
And you,
with your tired heart
and trembling hands,
are no different.
Healing is not always loud.
Sometimes it is simply
choosing to stay.
Choosing to try again.
Choosing to believe
that your story deserves another page.
So breathe.
Slowly.
Gently.
You have survived every difficult day
that once convinced you
you wouldnโt make it through.
And somehow,
despite everything,
you are still hereโ
still fighting.
