Many dogs feel more comfortable when approached gently by familiar people. Always ask the dog's guardian for permission to greet. Use a friendly tone and let the dog come to you. If they sniff, keep your hand relaxed at your side. If they show interest, offer a light pet just behind their shoulders, then give them space. If they want more attention, they'll let you know.
