checking for cranks roundness and thickness for setting the desired oil-clearance.

oem 20v main bearings have different thickness from 1-5, in-which you will have a hard time identifying which thickness you need without measuring the crank and caps inner and outer diameter.

one of the many reasons why your engine consumes oil :)
