Rain poured over the Salvador Campus, but it did little to slow down the excitement as GSU officially opened the most awaited Hiliugyon 2026. Students from all three campuses arrived with umbrellas, ready for the start of University Week.
The day began with an Opening Mass, bringing the GSU community together in prayer before the festivities kicked off. Soon after, proud students from different colleges marched proudly in the Parade, filling the grounds with color, energy, and loud cheers. The GSU Chorale led the prayer and sang the national anthem during the flag-raising ceremony, setting a meaningful tone for the celebration.
The opening program continued with welcoming messages from university leaders and guests. Dean Jasmin T. Gadian of the College of Teacher Education officially welcomed everyone and encouraged students to enjoy the week while strengthening the spirit of unity within the university. Congressman Rahman A. Nava, MD, delivered the keynote address, sharing words about hard work, leadership, and making the most of opportunities. The crowd's excitement grew even more when the candidates for Mr. and Ms. GSU were presented. One by one, they stepped onto the stage, drawing cheers from supporters who proudly waved banners and shouted their names.
Then came the moment many had been waiting for, the cheers and yells competition. Despite the rain, students stayed loud and energetic. The sound of chants echoed across the campus as each college gave its best performance. Some Bought drums, flags, banners and even motorcycles just to cheer. Wet shoes and soaked uniforms did not matter. What stood out most was the determination of every student to represent their college with pride.
The excitement carried into the afternoon as Mr. and Ms. GSU candidates returned for their production number. The audience watched as the candidates showcased their confidence during the casual wear segment and impressed everyone during the talent portion.
As Day 1 came to an end, rain may have fallen throughout the day, but the spirit of Hiliugyon remained stronger. The celebration has only just begun, and more things to look forward to during this week-long celebration.
