Hello mga ferson! The term Netspeak was coined by British linguist David Crystal in 2001 on the his book Language and the Internet. (Sadernas et. al, 2023)

This page was created as a product of a research study by a bunch of college kids regarding Netspeak, the popular language that is used on the Internet. He then mentioned that it is a language that displays features that are unique to the Internet and has the characteristics of electronic, global, and interactive. According to research, there are 3 word-formation processes of Filipino Netspeak.

1. Reversing
On CNN’s published article, the Commission on the Filipino Language, the official regulating body of the Filipino language explained that this word-formation process originated from the 19th century Philippine revolution in order to hide their real names. Additionally, a Linguist Professor from the University of the Philippines describe this word-minting as “tadbalik” (Nodalo, 2017).

2. Misspelling
In pop culture, words formed by misspellings are known as Jejenese originated through short messaging service or SMS. In their published article, Philstar described it as a constantly evolving language that is mainly used on the Internet.
Example: Kennat, Korek, Kras, Kween

3. Abbreviations
Abbreviation is described as shortening because the new words are formed by shortening.
Example: BFF, DP, FC, FR, FT

Did you know na ang mga salitang ginagamit natin ngayun tulad ng dilig, marites at sana all ay di lang basta basta at ang pagkabuo ng mga ito ay sumusunod parin sa rules of Language.

We call the study of word-formation or pagkabuo ng mga salita as Morphology.
Morphology is the study of forms used to describe that type of investigation that analyses all basic elements used in a language and it gives an idea about the source of the words with rules and regulations on how to form new words.

For example, the word “marites” is clipped from the phrase “mare anong latest?”
Clipping is the process of forming a new word by dropping one or more syllables from a polysyllabic word and refers to part of a word that serves for the whole.
Ang clipping ay isa sa mga paraan ng pagka-buo ng mga salita o word-formation.
