Researchers exploring Sulfur Cave along the Greece-Albania border have documented what is thought to be the world’s largest known spider web, a stunning natural structure covering about 106 square metres (1,140 sq ft) and inhabited by roughly 111,000 spiders from two species working in a dense network of interconnected funnel webs. Unlike most spiders, which are solitary, these arachnids coexist in a rare colonial web deep underground, thriving in total darkness by feeding on midges and other tiny cave organisms supported by sulfur-rich chemistry. The discovery, published in Subterranean Biology, reveals how a unique environment can shape surprising cooperative behavior and extreme biodiversity. Could nature’s hidden megastructures still be out there waiting to astonish us?
Single-celled organisms 📍
The bodies of plants and animals are made up of billions of cells, but some organisms consist of just one cell. We call these microscopic life forms unicellular (single-celled) organisms. Some kinds of single-celled organisms cause disease in humans.
