CHAPTER 1: ANG BABAENG NASA LIKOD
Palaging nasa likod ng classroom si Lia Monteverde.
Hindi dahil mahiyain siya—
kundi dahil doon siya komportable. Doon walang masyadong tanong. Walang masyadong tingin.
Habang nag-iingay ang buong klase, tahimik lang siyang nagdo-drawing sa gilid ng notebook. Mga mata. Mga ulap. Mga pusong kalahati lang ang buo.
“Lia, pasa mo na ‘yan,” sabi ng teacher.
Tumango siya at tumayo—
sabay may biglang umupo sa katabing bakanteng upuan.
Si Ken Alvarez.
Ang lalaking laging late, laging ngumingiti, at laging tila may itinatagong lungkot.
“Uy,” sabi niya. “Pwede dito?”
Tumango si Lia. Hindi niya alam kung bakit biglang bumilis ang tibok ng puso niya.

CHAPTER 2: ANG LALAKING LAGING NARIYAN
Hindi alam ni Lia kung kailan nagsimula.
Basta isang araw, napansin niyang palagi na lang si Ken ang katabi niya.
Kapag may group work—
“Dito na tayo, Lia.”
Kapag uwian—
“Sabay ka na.”
Kapag tahimik siya—
“Huy, okay ka lang?”
At doon siya natakot.
Dahil masyadong delikado ang masanay sa isang taong hindi mo sigurado kung hanggang kailan mananatili.

CHAPTER 3: MGA SALITANG HINDI MASABI
Isang hapon, naiwan sila sa classroom.
Umuulan sa labas. Mabigat ang hangin.
“Lia,” biglang sabi ni Ken, seryoso ang boses.
“May tinatanong ako.”
Napahinto siya sa pagdo-drawing.
“Ano?”
“May gusto ka bang tao?”
Parang may humigpit sa dibdib niya.
“Bakit mo tinatanong?”
Napangiti si Ken, pero pilit.
“Curious lang.”
Gusto niyang sumigaw ng ikaw.
Pero ang lumabas lang—
“Wala.”

CHAPTER 4: ANG IKATLONG TAO
Dumating si Mika.
Maganda. Matalino. Palakaibigan.
At malinaw—
may gusto siya kay Ken.
Nakita ni Lia kung paano ngumiti si Ken kay Mika.
Kung paano siya tawagin. Kung paano siya pansinin.
At doon niya napagtanto:
Mas masakit pala ang manahimik
kaysa umamin at masaktan.

CHAPTER 5: ANG PAGLAYO
Unti-unting umiwas si Lia.
Lumipat siya ng upuan.
Mas naging tahimik.
Mas madalas mag-isa.
“Anong problema mo?” tanong ni Ken isang araw.
“Wala,” sagot niya.
Pero ang totoo—
pagod na siyang magpanggap.

CHAPTER 6: ANG PAG-AMIN NA HULI NA
Araw ng graduation.
Nasa likod pa rin si Lia.
Pero ngayon, huling beses na.
Lumapit si Ken, hingal, parang may hinabol.
“Lia… may sasabihin ako.”
Tumingin siya sa kanya.
“Ken, wag na.”
“Hindi,” sabi niya. “Kailangan.”
Huminga siya nang malalim.
“Matagal na kitang gusto.”
Tumulo ang luha ni Lia.
“Ken…” nanginginig ang boses niya.
“Ngayon mo lang sinabi.”

CHAPTER 7: HINDI LAHAT MAY HAPPY ENDING
Hindi sila naging magkasama agad.
Dahil may mga bagay na kailangan munang ayusin.
May mga panahong kailangang palipasin.
Pero sa likod ng huling upuan—
may dalawang pusong natutong maging tapat.

Magkatabi silang naglalakad.
