🌱 The History of “Borsigiana” 🌱

In plant circles, “Borsigiana” has become a popular term used to describe what many believe is a distinct variety of Monstera Deliciosa. This so-called “small form” is known for its faster growth and smaller, more delicate leaves compared to the “large form,” often simply called Monstera Deliciosa.

However, it's important to understand that while "Borsigiana" is commonly used, it’s not a scientifically recognized name. Botanically speaking, the correct term for both forms is still Monstera Deliciosa. The distinction between “Deliciosa” and “Borsigiana” isn’t officially recognized in the botanical community, making it more accurate to refer to them as “large form” and “small form” instead.

🌱 Identifying Small Form vs. Large Form Using Petiole Sheaths 🌱

One of the best ways to differentiate between the small form and large form is by examining the “petiole sheath” (equivalent to a cataphyll)—the part that encases the base of the leaf stalk.

-Small Form (Borsigiana): The petiole sheath typically opens more than halfway up the petiole and detaches cleanly from the stem as the plant grows.
-Large Form (Deliciosa): The petiole sheath usually opens less than halfway, with a ruffled or wavy edge where it meets the leaf. It tends to remain on the plant longer before falling away.
