SECOND ROYAL PACIFIC ISLAND REGIMENT ASSISTS PNG POWER LTD, WEWAK
Friday 13 February, 2026
Moem Barracks and the Moem Community were without electricity for a week when a sago palm to be harvested was felled onto the powerline.
This led to the cooperation among the soldiers of Second Royal Pacific Island Regiment, the local community and PNG Power Ltd, Wewak as directed by the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Francis Vitata to initiate the restoration of electricity.
The first hurdle was to clear the path for the powerline to pass through. The Saturday morning of 7th February saw the soldiers and members of Moem No. 2 clearing through 700 meters of swamp and vegetation to clear a path for the powerline.
The next three days, from the 10th to the 12th of February, soldiers, lines men from PNG Power Ltd and members of the community worked together to set up three metal power poles. A lot of hard work from everyone requiring brute strength and ingenuity to complete the task and coordination. With the Regimental Sergeant Major CWO Waterhouse coordinating to synchronize the task of lifting the pole “Gentlemen, prepare to lift! Lift!”. This command saw four teams lifting and pulling on the pole to put firm in place.
