For those heading to the maunga these holidays, please note that the somewhat controversial bookable parking system will not be starting until 25 July. Check out the post below for details of the other changes that RAL has made following feedback from its community.

Kia ora,

We have received a heap of constructive feedback on the bookable parking process that we have been asked to implement at Mt Ruapehu. A massive thank you to all of those that have taken the time to contact us over the last week or so. We acknowledge that we didn’t get to some of your most common questions in depth over the last week, but we have been working on these questions and can now provide further information.

The great news is that on the back of this we have been able to make some changes to how and when the process will be in use to make sure that it is focused where it should be. We have also been able to address the booking window to improve fairness in access.

Frequently Asked Questions have been updated at http://www.mtruapehu.com/parking-faq and this and www.mtruapehu.com remain the most important source for anything you need to know before coming to visit us.

The major thing to know right now is that we have delayed launch by a couple of weeks and that it will be in place on weekends only for our 10 busiest Saturdays and Sundays from 25th July. (The first availability release then being Wednesday 22nd July and every Wednesday there on).

Some of you have asked if you will crash the system every Wednesday and so we have taken this extra time to make sure that our load testing has proven its capability and will handle whatever you can throw at it! In that same vein, we are taking the extra two weeks to bed in logic that the "just in case" bookings some of you had concerns over will not disadvantage other would-be visitors, again…all of the above and more is covered in the FAQ’s.

Also, if you or any your friends are not receiving our emails and should be (or would like to) please visit this link: https://www.pages03.net/mtruapehu/subscriptions/preferences

Thank you once more and we look forward to seeing you on the maunga soon.

Nga mihi nui,

The team at Mt Ruapehu

Mt Ruapehu, Whakapapa & Tūroa Ski Areas

Update on what’s happening on our maunga this season. More to come.

An exciting update re the upcoming winter season - we’re hopeful of opening our first ski area on Mt Ruapehu in late June/early July. This will be dependent on a number of factors, including snowfall and the Alert Level restrictions that exist at the time.

We had planned to open Happy Valley on 30th May this year in time for Queen’s Birthday weekend as usual, but unfortunately with the preparation, maintenance and staff hiring time lost during the lockdown, we’re unable to make this happen this year.

We will, however be opening the Sky Waka for sightseeing only over Queen's Birthday weekend (Sat 30th May - Monday 1st June) weather permitting.

At this stage we are planning a season that will see both Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields open every day the weather permits with top to bottom skiing and riding but it is likely that not all lifts will operate. The operational teams will start outlining that detail later this week via our social media channels.

We are very sorry for those who were looking forward to their first outing on the slopes over Queen's Birthday, but we encourage you to still come and enjoy the other incredible experiences on offer in our region.

Please visit our partner regions’ (Ruapehu NZ and Love Taupo) sites for some ideas and inspiration:
https://www.visitruapehu.com/ and https://www.lovetaupo.com/

We will confirm our NEW planned opening dates as soon as we can, some of this will be dependent on snowfall as usual.

Here is our latest update from our CEO Jono Dean:

snowsbest.com 15/05/2020

New Zealand announce "no limit" to daily skier numbers in 2020 | SnowsBest

No limit on numbers on ski fields in COVID Level 2! Bring it on!

Jono Dean from RAL says “Now we are in level 2 and we’ve developed these guidelines we can start sharing our plans for the season and work towards opening”. Can’t wait to hear your plans Jono!

snowsbest.com New Zealand resorts are not required to cap daily skier numbers during the COVID-19 season in 2020, in a surprise announcement today.

13/05/2020

Since the details of Level 2 were announced and our Prime Minister has made multiple references to the opening of ski fields in her announcements, bookings have started coming in. We want to make sure our loyal clientele don’t miss out on what could now be a bumper ski season! Get ready for an awesome winter supporting New Zealand tourism, Tūroa and all the small businesses in Ohakune that have served us all so well over so many years. Yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!
