My Anzac Day dedication this year is to my grandfathers and everyone else’s grandfathers, grandmothers, uncles, aunties, brothers and sisters that have found themselves tied up in war.
The book, The Bantam and the Solider is a lovely reminder of hope in amongst the desperation of war.
I made this quilt to wrap up a child somewhere and have the story read to them, in order that ‘lest we forget’. We need to keep talking and less of the fighting.
I have added a small piece of khaki woollen blanket that one of our grandfathers carried with him during WWII, as a reminder that war is not something that only lives on as a memory but is a very real and tangible reality to so many people. ⛑

Well that was a cold start to the day so I’ve had a play in the kitchen and have now added a winter warmer with whisky 🥃😁. If you like porridge, or if you don’t like porridge, you might just like it this way . Pears, pistachio, muscovado sugar, cream and a wee dram of whisky. Thanks to my dear friend Avril who introduced me to this extravagance, the humble ‘parritch’ has never tasted so good. 😆

Mountain bike trails put new spin on Whanganui farm

I know I’ve mentioned ‘That Place’ a wee while ago but here’s another story on this fun and beautiful mountain bike adventure at The Oskam’s farm. To all you riders out there, this is a fabulous place. 🙂🚵‍♀️ @mtb_that_place

Mountain bike trails put new spin on Whanganui farm Tom Oskam has built mountain bike trails in Australia and Canada and has returned to his family land on the Whanganui River to create tracks through the regenerating forest. The old woolshed is now used for fixing up bikes, the sheep dip's a shower and the former stockyards under the trees are a ple...

I found this book recently at a local 2nd hand bookshop, Book Hunters, and I’m really enjoying reading it. Perfect timing before we welcome back Australian travellers with or without your swags from 13 April this year. 💛💚

Some of you, who have stayed with us, may well have met our son Finn ( who lives down the street, not with us). He’s doing very interesting things these days and wanting to make a positive difference with the limited water resources we have available.
A small write-up featured in the latest Air New Zealand Kia Ora magazine. Flying high, Finn 🙂

In between making breakfasts and beds I do this! Patchwork and hand quilting is my other happy place and there’s no more joy than finally finishing a quilt! 😉😁 I love starting out with a pile of fabric pieces and seeing what comes next. I don’t follow patterns; I just let it unfold into something to snuggle into. In my studio I have quite a number that I’ve been making over the past weeks. 🪡🧵😍

Breakfast in bed with a favourite wooden tray I found at a charity shop many years ago, plus a bit of quilting that I was doing before I served the breakfast bowl to our guest. Curious thing how it colour matches 😉 they do say everything’s connected!

In between guests, I’ve been in my studio with a paint brush this week. Inspired by some of the objects I have dotted around, I have made this piece for a fundraiser for Age Concern and it will be in an exhibition during AOS ( Artists Open Studios) later in March.

I made myself a New Year’s resolution to get out more! 😉 so today I took myself off to The Sarjeant Art Gallery and joy, oh joy, an exhibition based on contemporary textiles! My happy day.

We often receive a lot of comments from guests about the ceilings in our home and their attention to detail. Though not intricate like many earlier villa ceilings, our bnb/home was built in 1910 which is part of the Arts and Crafts movement. Whanganui has a magnificent number of arts and crafts homes lovingly restored and admired. If you’re interested in New Zealand’s architectural heritage, enjoy a weekend of wandering around and you’ll be amazed at what you see.

And following on from the previous post, these are of the commission I finished late last year.
Our lovely guests gave me a paper bag of old treasures and asked me to come up with something for them to enjoy over the years to come. 😍 It was like a lucky dip. 😀
I’m very happy to take more commissions if anyone else would like their memories framed. Please get in touch.

Many guests ask me what kind of art do I make? Well, it’s a varied practice of collage, paint, photography and quilting.
For those of you who have already stayed with us, you may have noticed the collages of wallpapers that I made from saved pieces during our renovation phase just before we opened the Bnb 5 years ago.
My next post will be of two pieces that I was commissioned to create last year. I love being in my studio here at the Bnb. 😍

In my series of lap or cot size quilts, this one is deeply inspired by the quilt makers of Gees Bend, Alabama. Some of you who have stayed in The River Room may have looked through the book shelf and spotted the book on Gees Bend Quiltmakers? This community of quilt makers are arguably the most influential on contemporary quilt making around the globe. 🪡🧵This hand stitched quilt is currently available $420. Talk about a labour of love! 😍

Upstairs in the old National Bank/The Treasury building on Victoria Ave, is a tranquil, beautiful, stylish and exciting new place to explore stunning handmade products from artists and crafts people based here in Whanganui and around the globe. I could spend hours in here. I intend to spend more hours in here. 😉 Mothwerk

I know it’s another coffee addict’s photo but will you take a look at this work of art!!!!
As an artist, I admire this for so many reasons… craftsmanship, style, passion, care and professionalism. It was a shame to disturb that, but of course I did!
And it’s made by Jack at Article with my favourite oat milk Otis Oat Milk

One of the joys I’ve had over the 5 years (almost to the day) of welcoming guests to our bnb, is hearing guests say how much they enjoy my quilts. Both rooms have a queen size patchwork quilt that I made to nestle in amongst the colours and individual interior design.
Now, I am thoroughly immersed in my studio/gallery creating small person size quilts. Cot size, lap size and king single. And always inspired by our garden. 🪴 When I have managed to make a few more they will be for sale and I’m happy to make on commission also. Please get in-touch 🙂 🪡🧵

Our creative little city just keeps on giving cool vibes. 😁

Whanganui has been announced as an international UNESCO City of Design!

This follows a one-year application process to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

The application was a city-wide effort and Whanganui & Partners is grateful to everyone who supported the application. We’re thrilled that the City of Design designation is a platform to showcase our region’s 800 years of design and creativity with the world.

And the well scraped out bowl is a sign of a happy tummy. Thank you to my lovely guest Beth for enjoying her pansies this morning.

Good morning. Many months ago, I said “be like a pansy”. 🌸🌼🌻 Well, the garden is full of them at the moment and they are so happy. We all need a bit of happy in our mornings at the moment don’t we.
