Upokongaro Cycle Bridge now Open

Upokongaro Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge opened to the public on Wednesday. It is part of the Mountains to Sea – Ngā Ara Tūhono trail, which begins in Ohakune and continues through National Park to Whanganui, ending at Castlecliff’s North Mole.
The Mayor said it was wonderful to see children from Upokongaro School taking part in the opening ceremony and involved in the first official crossing from Papaiti to Upokongaro.
He said the bridge opening was good news for tourism and visitors to Whanganui – bringing economic benefits to the district.
However, he suggested that “people refrain from doing the loop along State Highway 4. With current speed settings on the highway it isn’t the best place to be on a bike.”
Mayor McDouall recognised the significant funding contributions of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (50%) and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment ($600,000) towards the bridge and also thanked council officers, the project team and the Upokongaro and Papaiti communities for their participation.
“I acknowledge that it has taken us a while to get here,” he said. “Our process for consultation needed to improve and we have had to work to remedy that. There certainly is still work to do and we will ensure we follow through on our commitments in the interests of the people and the environment of this place.”

Happy Friday!

It's a great day to be one of New Zealand's most iconic, 101 year old, heritage-listed buildings. The Sarjeant Gallery at Pukenamu Queen's Park is covered in scaffolding and hoardings, surrounded by workmen and diggers and yet is still as elegant as ever, as it undergoes the major which will make it ready to face the next 101+ years of giving back to the community and the country.

A very good morning to all of the Sarjeant Gallery's many donors, supporters, ambassadors and friends - where ever you are!

This Durie Hill Tower was opened in 1925 and is a real testament to the builders of the time. The tower is constructed of cemented marine sandstone containing shell fragments (simply called shellrock) from a nearby quarry. It is 33.5 metres high (104 feet) and the rock is estimated to be more than 2 million years old.

Please think of others who may be going without before you stockpile groceries🛒🇳🇿❤️

Kia ora New Zealand

We understand this is a very uncertain time for our country. We’re all a bit worried about the health and safety of our family, friends and communities. And we know that access to safe, quality food and groceries is essential to our health and peace of mind. We want to help alleviate some of the uncertainty many of us are feeling by letting you know that when it comes to food and groceries, we’ve got you covered.

New Zealand grows and makes some of the best food in the world (in our humble opinion), and our distribution centres and store teams are going above and beyond to make sure we’ve got plenty of it available on our shelves. But, we need your help.

Shop in our stores.
They are safe. While we’ve always had very thorough cleaning, hygiene and food safety processes in our stores, we’ve increased these measures even further to help keep our team and our communities safe and well.

Shop like you normally would.
Buying more than you need means others go without. Be considerate and avoid stockpiling. By all means pick up a couple of extra things in your shop, but there is no need to stock up for weeks in advance.

Do your shopping online.
If you’re self-isolating or unable to get to the supermarket, and worried about not having what you need, shop our online services and we can get food to you and your family safely at home.

Look out for each other.
In times of uncertainty, a little kindness goes a long way. Be kind to your fellow shoppers and to our store and distribution centre teams, who are working around the clock to keep shelves stocked. They’re our heroes.

Feeding our communities is our greatest priority and if we all work together, and take care of each other, we can make sure there’s plenty for everyone.
Thanks New Zealand - with your support, we’ve got this.
