The Good Oil: Did Suzuki invent the ‘lifestyle’ SUV?

"Making a small-medium SUV truly trendy? That’s got to be down to the Suzuki Vitara, which was wowing image-conscious urbanites way back in 1988."

The thirteenth round of the 2022 MotoGP World Championship turned out to be unlucky for Team Suzuki Ecstar when Joan Mir picked up an ankle injury following a terrifying highside at Turn 4 on the first lap.
Alex Rins approached the race with caution, hovering around the Top 10 at a circuit which doesn’t much suit his style. With 15 laps to go, he was running in 9th but quickly closing in on the group of three riders in front of him, a few laps later he had moved into 8th. Alex began to struggle with sliding and braking in the closing stages of the Austrian GP, despite this he stayed focused and finished the race in 8th, very close to 7th.
Rain clouds loomed over the Red Bull Ring ahead of the 28-lap race, and 92,000 fans waited eagerly for the action. Joan Mir started 8th on the grid, and Alex Rins 11th, and the pair were hoping to carve through in their usual style. Mir made a quick start and was getting in the mix when he was launched into the air and landed heavily, he went directly to the medical centre where X-rays confirmed fractures and bone fragments in his right ankle. He will undergo further checks on Monday, including an MRI scan to rule out ligament damage.

Our Story

In 1984, the Suzuki Motor Corporation purchased the assets of South Pacific Suzuki Distributors, owned by the Coleman family of Wanganui, to form Suzuki New Zealand Limited. In addition to importing Suzuki cars and motorcycles, the Company operated a vehicle assembly plant until 1988, when changes within the New Zealand market led to the end of local assembly.

Suzuki now offers a range of more than 25 model variants ranging from New Zealand’s most popular small car, the Suzuki Swift, to the class-leading Grand Vitara 4WD range. It is also New Zealand’s top selling motorcycle brand, with an extensive range of motorcycles from 50cc scooters, to powerful classic cruisers and competition-winning superbikes like the GSX-R1000.

The farming sector is also important to Suzuki. In fact it was right here on a New Zealand farm that the Coleman family and Suzuki created the first ever 4-wheel ATV. Suzuki branded ATVs are recognised for their ruggedness and reliability, and their ability to handle the demanding conditions of New Zealand’s high-country farms.

Three top-class dealer networks operate across the country, one for cars, one for motorcycles and one for marine. Suzuki’s customers can expect a high level of service and care from a small group of franchised owners who value being part of the Suzuki family.

The head office of Suzuki New Zealand Limited remains in Wanganui, where a dedicated staff of 50 enjoys being part of a highly efficient operation that is, today, one of New Zealand’s leading motor vehicle brands.
