Settlers Honey Ltd

A family owned company on a journey to produce the world’s finest Manuka Honey, sourced from NZ SHOP OPEN! Settlers Honey Ltd
Finest Makowhai Honey

In 1893, Joseph George Haddow travelled up the Waitotara River in a canoe.

He settled on his farm Kaimoko with his wife Sophie and their family. This land has been farmed with true pioneer spirit by his descendants. Known as Makowhai Station, and comprising 25,000 acres of sheep and beef country, native bush and manuka, the land is now farmed by his great grandson Henry Matthews. Settlers Honey is a tribute to the pioneers of Makowhai Station and the pristine environment in which it is located.

The native bush is now in full flower! 🐝
In most areas the native bush will flower for 4-6 weeks at the beginning of the season. As the bush flower disappears the Mānuka then starts to flower.

Some of our hives are moved to their Mānuka sites early in the season so that our bees can get busy collecting the sweet nectar from the native bush. Our beekeepers will collect the bush honey from the hive when the flower finishes, just as the Mānuka is starting. This honey becomes our Makowhai Native blend 🍯

QUEEN REARING 🐝👑
At Settlers Honey keeping our hives healthy and strong is our top priority. We know that a key element of a strong & healthy hive is a strong queen. That’s why we have not one but two internal Queen Rearing teams.

Why do we rear our own queens:
-To get good genetics
-To have young healthy queens that lay more eggs
-So we can replace our queens every few years to keep our hives strong

In the peak of the season the queen breeders supply to our beekeepers 700 mated queens per week. An already mated queen has less chance of failing and is able to start laying eggs as soon as she is put in her new hive.

Our specialised Queen Rearing beekeepers work hard to produce nothing but the best queens for our hives. The stronger the queen, the healthier the hive, the more honey the hive will produce! 🍯

Our Makowhai range is named after a very special place, that is Makowhai Station. Makowhai station is the home of Settlers Honey, the place where it all started and the inspiration behind the Settlers Honey brand.

Makowhai Station is located at the end of the Waitotara Valley Road in a small settlement called Ngamatapouri.

Makowhai Station also offer a range of other activities including horse treks, motorbike trial rides, hiking, hunting and much more. Check them out Makowhai Station

Did you know that Bee's are responsible for pollination of approximately one third of the food we eat - and 90 per cent of fruit trees are pollinated by bees.

Without bees we would lose a lot of our diverse and rich variety of food. Imagine a world without strawberries, kiwifruit, apples, nuts, coffee, chocolate or even denim jeans! And that’s only the beginning.

Lets all take a moment to appreciate the amazing job our little pollinating friends do! 🐝
