SH4 WHANGANUI TO RAETIHI – PLANNED CLOSURES FOR SLIP REPAIRS, 10-14 JUNE
State Highway 4 between Whanganui and Raetihi will be CLOSED to all through-traffic for five days next month. The road will be closed daily from 8:30am-4pm, Monday 10 to Friday 14 June. Local residents will still have access to their properties, but please be prepared for some delays.
These five consecutive day-time closures will allow our crews to remove overhanging material and unstable rock caused by a prior slip near Kakatahi (50km north of Whanganui). This work must be completed during the day as our crews require clear visibility, and the road is narrow so a full closure in both directions is the safest option for everyone. Safety is our priority.
The detour will be via SH1 between Bulls and Waiouru, so please plan ahead as this route will add an extra hour of travel time to your journey.
This work is weather dependant and may be postponed to the next available day. We will update this post with any changes.
Thank you for your understanding while we make State Highway 4 safer and more efficient for you. ^EL

WHANGANUI VINTAGE WEEKEND
This fantastic video, put together by #MarkSeconi , really encapsulates why we love Whanganui Vintage Weekend - it brings so much of our heritage to the fore and people get out there and enjoy it. Aren't these trains fantastic.
In this video, credit must go Mark for his production, one he did free of charge and because he is so Passionate about our city and the trains/boats and generally historic nature of Whanganui. And he wants to accredit the music to Andrew London Trio, recorded on the Vintage Weekend Jazz Cruiie, aboard the PS Waimarie.
The other scenes are from Mainline Steams Weekend Excursions with JB1236 on the head while onboard video scenes can be accredited to Sylwia Seconi.
Well done to you all - your contribution is appreciated>

Here's a few things to do this weekend.
I'm sure a number of you would have been here as Parnells Cafe, now you know how long it's been there. Love Wanganui history😊
This is a gorgeous old photo of Parnells on the corner of Liverpool Street and Victoria Ave in 1913. The signage suggests that they were Landscape Gardeners, Florists, Fruiterers & Nurserymen. There's also a sign on the window advertising Cadbury Chocolates!! Yum - my kind of shop!!
There seems to be a lot of workers and children posing for the photo - it sure is a beauty, what do you think??

Friday's history for you of our fabulous Wanganui. Enjoy your weekend 😊
This month 166 years ago - a piece of history recorded in this awesome painting. You can see a glimmer of Mt Ruapehu in the top left. I thought there would be a lot more bush on the hills at that time - maybe this is just an artists impression??
A view of Petre or Wanganui (Whanganui) in September 1841, just after its establishment.
Whanganui was the New Zealand Company’s second settlement. It began as an adjunct of Wellington. Most of its early European settlers came via Wellington and many made the journey on foot along the coast. The name Petre (after Lord Petre, a director of the company) was never popular and it was officially changed in 1854.
Uncertainty marked Whanganui’s early years. While lower-river Māori were generally supportive of ‘their’ town, upriver Māori were hostile. Conflict broke out in 1847. In May 1848 the government made a further payment to confirm its ownership of almost 35,000 ha.
In this painting the building being thatched is the Police Office and Police Magistrate’s house. The larger home of E.J. Wakefield (‘ware Wikitoria’), who completed the original purchase of Whanganui for the New Zealand Company, can also be seen. Across the river is Shakespeare’s Cliff.
