If you’re an ANZ home loan customer, looking to add solar and can pay back the cost of that solar in 3 years then certainly take note.

Mike Hosking makes the point that if you’re investing in your house, then yes it is a genuine investment. And with solar, yes it’s going to make it cheaper to run homes.

We've just had Department of Conservation send us an update on their upgraded solar power system, and the Kakapo breeding season. Obviously reliable power is of utmost importance to the success of the Kākāpō Recovery and we look forward to further updates on how chicks are progressing!

Solar panels are a logical addition to a home with a swimming pool. In summertime when the sun is shining at its peak you can use power generated from solar to supplement or cover your pool's energy requirements. Whether that be the circulation pump, heating system or both. It also gives you the opportunity to use your pool earlier in the year and continue using it for longer at the end of the season, without the fear of a dramatically higher power bill.

Why choose solar power over a solar water heating system for your pool? The added benefit of solar is that you are not restricted to using the energy just to heat your pool - you get to use the power generated in your home too. When the swimming season is finally over, your solar will still be generating, providing power to your home and the pool pump. Add a battery and you've got power available during a power cut too.

What sized solar system should you get? It really depends on how big your pool is, how long you need to run the pump and heating for, and how much solar power you might want to use in your home as well. A 2kW pool pump will use around 12kWh of power when running for 6 hours a day. A typical 5kW, north facing solar system can produce an average of around 30kWh in the summer and 10kWh during winter, greatly supplementing the cost of the power used when you have a pool.*

*Calculations given are based on a 5kW system on a north facing roof, at around 30 degrees pitch, with zero shading.

Recent power cuts in the area were another reminder about the added benefit of battery storage. Bet the neighbours had plenty of reasons to pop in for a visit over the two days they were without power!
