Look… I was going to kick into some great speech about ‘You can’t want material things or material things is all you’ll ever have.’, linking it precariously into art and then, with absolute finesse, link all topics into this painting.
Instead I tried to rehearse the skit too many times, started tripping over the words and this is the wonderful result.

Gazing at this one in the studio, adding another layer and gazing at it again. If someone took it away, would it be finished or paused.? The answer, I believe, is in outcomes. When the painting’s job was to add a passive joy to each day, and it achieves that, it’s complete. In this project’s case, there’s a life I want to dance in the colors .. and in those colors, a depth that loved ones can stare into for prolonged periods, even sharing a story or moment of those captured. In that way, the painting would accelerate those interactions and be a figurative campfire to have those memories and moments around. Or maybe it’s just paint … but I don’t believe that.

How bizarre…
In the background you can see the giant olive trees of the gorge. This place is also home to abundant Chilean fire trees. They ignite the steep cliffs with crimson and, as the first crop of olives show their juicy buds, there is a presence of phthalo turquoise.
This place is step yet still, colorful yet calm, and homely yet it has the allure of somewhere far, far away.
