We have some exciting news for you. A new crew member will join us next year.
The last two years were certainly an challenging time. Now we are looking forward to a new normal in every way 😉

As of today, 3rd Dec, the country is moving into the Covid-19 Protection Framework.

To be able to keep operating and due to comply with the new mandates put in place by the government, we have made the decision to opt in and require Vaccine Passes from now on.

We are sad if that means we are not able to welcome all of you aboard at the moment.

Our boats: Kindred Spirit – the lady of the lake

Kindred Spirit is our second boat. We purchased her in June 2019 after Dave fell in love when he saw her for the first time.

Kindred Spirit is, like Fearless, based on a classical Herreshoff design – although she got slightly altered by her builder Alan Orams.

Key features:
• Cutter rigged sloop with a GRP hull and a full keel
• built in 1976 by Alan Orams in Whangarei
• Model: based on a Mobjack
• Length on deck: 47ft (14.3m)
• Beam: 12’6ft (3.8m)
• Max speed under engine: 7 knts
• Max speed sailing: 9 knts

Originally built for a friend of Orams, the boat changed hands over time from a family of four who lived on Kindred Spirit for 10 years, to a couple who lived on her for 15 years. After she sold again and got a little bit neglected the next years, Dave and Jess bought her out of Tauranga.
There was quite a bit work to do and we restored her ourselves with some help of friends and a lot of love over the next 7 months to bring her up to the newest safety standards. In that time, she had new wiring, new plumbing, new paint (she was white before and has now this lovely blue hull), new lacquer (a lot of sanding was involved) and lots of other little (and not so little) things.

In January 2020 we finally could do the first trip with her on Lake Taupo. We love it that we can now offer trips with more comfort and space for our customers.

Our boats: Fearless – the sleeping beauty

It was our beautiful boat Fearless Dave started his own business with, together with a business partner at that time. She is something very special as she marked the beginning of a new era for Dave (even twice, first when he started his own business and then when he met Jess on Fearless 😊)

Fearless is a classic Herreshoff Nereia design.
Key features:
• Steel hulled cutter rigged ketch
• Designer: L Francis Herreshoff
• Model: Nereia 36.50′ / 11.13m
• build in 1986 in Picton, New Zealand

Fearless spent many year’s sailing the waters of New Zealand, before she was sailing up to the pacific islands, going on many deep-water adventures.
In 2001 unfortunately Fearless hit a reef and sunk. She spent 12 long days submerged up to her portholes. Luckily she was refloated and towed back to Fiji for repairs to make the long voyage home to NZ.
David found her online in 2010 in disrepair and after a lot of research Fearless was financed by his friendly bank manager.
So a deal was done to fully restore Fearless back to her beauty.

After that she spent the last 10 years in Taupo becoming an icon of the lake.
She is now due for some small repairs and maintenance again, especially after being scorched by a marina fire, which were put on hold for a while due to Covid19.
But we will see her back on the lake as soon as possible.

With the end of daylight saving there are just a few weeks left before our sunset trips will finish as well at the end of April. Make sure to book in and join us on one of the last sunset trips of the season.

Meet the team! Today: Jess

Jess is originally from Germany and used to work as a customs officer.
She loves traveling and while exploring New Zealand, she stepped on board Fearless in February 2016, not knowing she would fall in love with the skipper and sailing. Now Taupo is her home.
Jess is managing the office with the marketing for the company and all administrative work but loves it even more to join Dave as often as possible on the sailing trips.
And as there is always something to do for maintenance on boats, she started to enjoy the mechanical tasks coming with it as well.
She picked up skydiving, loving the feeling of complete freedom when jumping out of a plane and is looking to get her own skipper’s ticket as soon as possible.

Meet the team! Today: Dave

Dave is the heart and soul of the company ❤
Coming from a family of seafarers and boat builders it was inevitable that he would take up sailing. Dave has a background in hospitality. But also when he had a motel or later a hostel, sailing was always his passion.
Dave has spent over 20 years sailing on Lake Taupo with more than 15 years on varies charter yachts, making him the most experienced sailing charter yacht skipper on the lake. After sailing Barbary for about 5 years and learning of “Barbary Bill”, Barbary’s original owner on Lake Taupo, who started offering sailing trips to the Maori Rock Carvings, Dave is now sailing his own yachts, Fearless since 2010 and Kindred Spirit since 2019.
He is a hands on man! Most things on the yacht he can fix himself. He restored both boats himself, with the help of family and friends, and knows his boats inside out.
