BUDDY SEAT
Grab a seat and sit a while,
If you need someone to make you smile,
Soon someone will come along,
And have a chat or sing a song,
To make you feel not so blue,
So you can enjoy just being you.

small beginnings

AUM CULTURE: THE BUDDY BENCH. . Last summer we were blessed to be offered a creation called the Buddy Bench, made by artist, festival legend and longtime friend of AUM, Tim Turner.

What is a Buddy Bench? It is a seat for someone who is feeling contemplative, lonely or blue to sit and prompt awareness to the possible need of someone else’s company, knowledge, care and/or advice. Or simply to meet new people.

Festivals are a great place to unwind but being around lots of people or the energy of dance floors can heighten the senses at times, so having spaces for quiet moments are also important. AUM already has Healing Glade activities, quiet camping, and some chillout spots in addition to our own Haven safe space. The addition of the Buddy Benches was welcomed and their popularity noted. Many times you could walk past would be someone chilling, having a chat or reading a book.

The Buddy Benches were made after Tim came across the concept online and thought it would make an awesome addition to festival or community gatherings.

Tim says, “The bench I saw was at a school in the UK and all the school knew that if someone was seated there, they were opening themselves to the company or aide of fellow students and so anyone willing, and of course open to sharing/caring would come and sit, chat.”

Three Buddy Benches were created from macrocarpa wood, artistic expression and love. They were all unique and placed in carefully chosen locations around the festival site.

Tim said before AUM, “My hope is that you take a seat in any of the three seats I have created, not just because you need help, advice or company but also perhaps you simply want to meet new friends too.”

Buddy benches are a lovely meeting point of festivals, culture and art. Be excellent to each other out there.

Enjoy this lovely poem by Tim which could be seen on a plaque on each of the Buddy Benches:
