Had an amazing time staying in the cottage. Extremely well equipped. Beautiful views. Wonderful hosts. What more could you ask for. We will be back xx
We had the most amazing day walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing - as you can see we totally lucked out with the weather! I can’t recommend this trip highly enough, and the West Wing was the perfect place to stay. We really needed that comfy bed at the end of the day!
Thank you Bev and Eddie! It was amazing to meet you and to stay at Shannon Cottage! Everything was incredible! waking up to the mountain... awesome! We will be back soon!
Nine happy mountain bikers in the house tonight and a rainbow in the view.
"Are you a professional painter?"
"I am today."
Had a fabulous family holiday here last year. We got the most amazing snowfall - biggest the town had seen in 10+ years I was told. Highly recommended - best views in town too.
We're busily upgrading the house to be easier to heat for the winter. There's a new ceiling in the hallway, more insulation over the bathrooms, and next week two new heat pumps are going in to the West Wing and the main living room. Our skiers will be cosy!

Holiday accommodation for couples, families or groups with stunning views of Mt Ruapehu. Perfect for ski trips, Tongariro Crossing, bike trails, hiking.

Operating as usual

Now that the ski season has come to an end and summer temperatures are rising, it's a great time to visit the Central Plateau for other activities. The Tongariro Crossing is open for unguided trampers now and the shuttle companies are running. The Old Coach Road is great for biking and hiking with spectacular views of railway viaducts across bush-clad gorges. The famous Ohakune Carrot Park now has a full army-style assault course as well as swings, slides and bike tracks, with picnic areas and bbqs for rest and refreshment. The Skywaka gondola on the Whakapapa side of the mountain is closed for skiing but opens 3 December for sightseeing rides and access to the Knoll Ridge cafe. Ohakune is also a great set-off point for the Bridge to Nowhere and Whanganui River trips.

Just want to thank all our Auckland guests who had the moral fortitude to cancel their bookings during Level 4 & 3 and didn't try to sneak out of the city for a ski trip. We appreciate your kindness and consideration in obeying the rules and keeping the rest of us safe. Hope you're back in Level 2 soon and can come down for the last of the snow!

Skiers, watch for more details. And snow is in the forecast! Yay!

[08/28/21]   After a run of cancellations it was lovely to see a new booking today. I admire their optimism!

LOTS of snow on the mountain and just enough down in the town to make things pretty. Perfect winter conditions for photographers in Ohakune today!

Great weather over the last few days and our guests had a better time than the poor school holiday visitors who got stuck with awful conditions! Hoping for a nice thick dump of snow overnight to boost the current base on the skifields. Everything is operational now but more snow is always welcome for the best skiing. Bring it on, Mother Nature!

Turoa skifield is open and it's a bluebird day! Just the lower learner slopes open so far until we get a bit more snow, but happy crowds lined up at the tows this morning and lots people more came to sightsee. It's fabulous up on Mt Ruapehu!

Woke this morning to a landscape transformed into a winter wonderland, and the snow is forecast to continue all day. Perfect timing for the ski season opening this weekend! It's breathtakingly beautiful and I'll be out with my camera shortly!

Snowmaking started today up on the Turoa skifield. (Those white patches in the middle below the snowline) as the team prepares for the new season opening on July 3rd. Fun to watch!

[05/26/21]   Hurrah - we WILL have chocolate eclairs this winter! It's worth the trip to Ohakune just for these!

Colder temperatures are bringing snow, as long as the wild winds don't blow it away! The mountain is looking fabulous right now, and while the Whakapapa Sky Waka is closed until the end of May there is snow to be found on the Turoa side if the kids want to have a play.

Enjoyed hosting two families who filled the Cottage and the West Wing this weekend. We dropped them off up Mt Ruapehu to walk the Round the Mountain track to Whakapapa... and then the weather closed in. Hope you didn't get too drenched, guys!

If you can stretch the budget to do a scenic flight over the volcanoes we can highly recommend Mountain Air to fly with. They operate a small grass airfield opposite the turn-off to the Chateau Tongariro. www.mountainair.com Super-friendly chaps, very accommodating and full of local knowledge.

So many walks in our area and the Northern Circuit is one of the most versatile with several routes in and out, meaning you can do sections of it over several days or just explore for a day and come out again.

We did a little bit of a mercy dash today! Our weekend cottage guest lost her car key and the spare was in Auckland. Fortunately so were we, so we collected the key and brought it down to Ohakune with us this afternoon. The stranded guest gratefully sped away and has just reached home back in Auckland. Come again any time!
