What we focus on flourishes.
If we spend our days only noticing what is difficult, our brains become very good at finding more of the same.
But when we intentionally notice moments of kindness...
A shared laugh.
A warm drink.
A beautiful sunrise.
A helping hand.
Our brains begin to notice those too.
Not because life is perfect.
But because hope grows where we choose to look.
So as winter begins to loosen its grip, may we keep looking for the light.
Because after every frost...
..the sun shines

Back to School... and That's a Big Transition for Our Nervous Systems
As the school break come to an end, there will be lots of different emotions bubbling away this weekend.
Some children will be excited.
Some will be worried.
Some parents will be looking forward to a return to routine...
..while also supporting children through those big emotions.
Teachers and school staff may be feeling a little nervous too, wondering about the term ahead, welcoming new learners, reconnecting with classes, and preparing for all that a new term brings.
Here's something important to remember...
This is normal.
Our nervous systems are beautifully designed to notice change.
Whenever we move from one routine to another, our brains naturally become more alert. We begin scanning for what is familiar, what is different, and whether we are safe.
That's not a sign that something is wrong.
It's our nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do.
This week, we can all help one another by slowing things down a little.
Start the morning with connection before rushing into the day.
Expect a few wobbles.
Be patient, with children, with others, and with yourself.
As routines return, our nervous systems will settle too.
Because when we feel safe...
..we connect.
When we connect...
..we regulate.
And when we are regulated...
..we are ready to learn, work, play, and thrive.

Matariki: A Time for Connection, Reflection, and Renewal
At BrainHug, we often talk about the importance of safety, connection, and belonging because our brains are wired for relationship. We thrive when we feel connected to one another, to our communities, and to the world around us.
In the busyness of everyday life, we can forget to slow down and tend to our own nervous systems.
Matariki gently reminds us to do just that.
To share kai and laughter with those we love.
To rest and restore.
To spend time in nature.
To reconnect with the people who fill our buckets.
To reflect on what has been and consider what we hope for in the year ahead.
From all of us at BrainHug, we wish you a peaceful and restorative Matariki.

The Nervous System for Kids
21/06/2026
Nearly at the holidays.
The tank might be feeling a little empty.
Every calm conversation, every smile at the classroom door, gives a young person (or a big person) a chance to start again...and has helped shape a brain for safety, belonging, and resilience.
Together, we fire possibility. We wire connection. We inspire hope.

Sometimes the most important thing you do today won't be on your to-do list.
It might be:
Eating lunch.
Drinking some water.
Going for a short walk.
Standing in the sunshine for five minutes.
Calling someone who fills your bucket.
Going to bed a little earlier.
As adults, we are often so busy supporting others that we forget our own nervous systems need care too.
We cannot pour from an empty cup.
Our brains need safety.
Our brains need connection.
Our brains need rest.
Looking after yourself isn't selfish.
It's biological.
The more regulated we are, the more available we become for the people we care about.
So tonight,
Slow down.
Breathe.
Your nervous system matters too.

One Week Left to Secure Your Place | Prof Judith Howard in Nelson
In just one week's time, internationally respected educator, researcher, and author Professor Judith Howard will be joining us in Nelson.
The response from educators, leaders, RTLB, health professionals, social service providers, and community organisations has been incredible. In fact, we have already increased venue capacity to accommodate demand and ensure more people have the opportunity to attend.
If you have been thinking about joining us, now is the time to secure your place.
Judith's work is transforming how educators and organisations understand behaviour, attendance, wellbeing, inclusion, trauma, and learning. Her ability to translate complex neuroscience into practical, everyday strategies has made her one of the most respected voices in this field internationally.
Whether you work in education, health, social services, youth support, leadership, or simply care deeply about supporting children, young people, and the adults who walk alongside them, this is a rare opportunity to learn from someone who has helped shape trauma-aware and neuroscience-informed practice around the world.
At BrainHug, Judith's work has deeply influenced our own understanding of relational neuroscience, belonging, and learning. To have her sharing her knowledge here in Aotearoa is both a privilege and an opportunity not to be missed.
Because when we understand the brain, we better understand behaviour.
And when we better understand behaviour, we create environments where people feel safe, connected, and ready to learn.
