Tongariro Crossing Lodge

Comments

We booked at the Tongariro Crossing lodge 8-10 March 2021 and would highly recommend this accommodation to everyone. Perfectly located and close to the start of the Tongariro is what we wanted. This place is owned and run by a lovely couple who were so hospitable. The rooms were generous in size and warm and very clean bathrooms. The beds were super comfortable and the cooked breakfast was five stars. Highly recommend checking out this accommodation. Thanks Louis and Marina for your superb service. Wishing you all the best for the future.

The countdown to the snow season has begun! Exciting stuff!

Monday marked an exciting milestone for us on our countdown to Winter 2022, with the first snowflake falling on Happy Valley, a month earlier than previous years.

The Snow Factory, used exclusively to support snowmaking efforts in Whakapapa’s Happy Valley, is one of its kind in New Zealand. It has capacity to produce up to 200 cubic metres of snow a day, and as an all-weather system, will continue to run 24/7 in the lead up to winter.

This photo was taken this morning and our Head of Snowmaking, Pete, estimates the pile is now sitting at about 400 cubic metres. Starting our snowmaking efforts early, working in these piles, and utilising thermal blankets in the coming weeks, will help support snow coverage and protection from weather and warmer temperatures. It’s just some of the mahi underway to ensure a great opening for Happy Valley come Queen’s Birthday weekend, 66 days from now.

Within three weeks, Pete expects to have a two metre snow coverage across the sledding area. He will then turn his attention to the rest of Happy Valley to support skiing and riding. As temperatures drop, we will also see the other larger snow guns come into effect and double down on our snow making efforts.

We look forward to watching this pile grow in the coming weeks and then spread right across the valley of happinesses. The countdown is on!

The Tupapakurua Falls track is a firm favourite for us and our guests. Starting just 3km from the lodge it leads to a beautiful remote waterfall through the untouched Erua Forest. Native bird and plant life abound in the forest and on a clear day you might even catch a glimpse of Mt Taranaki from a lookout just half an hour from the start of the track. And if you feel energetic you can challenge yourself by seeing how far you can carry a bucket of gravel to help with the upkeep of the track!
