WTMC Ruapehu Lodge

WTMC Ruapehu Lodge

Summer Lodge is up and running. The view up the mountain this afternoon and the evening sunset on Egmont...
Not too long now until Summer Lodge. Go to the trip planner at:
If you are driving to the lodge on any weekend during the 2021 ski season you will need to book a carpark. And there is a different system in place from previous years. Go to the WTMC forum at https://wtmc.org.nz/forums/topic/car-parking-at-mt-ruapehu/ or to the Lodge web page at https://wtmc.org.nz/lodge/ for details.
Lodge Update. Our Maunga. May 2021
The mountain has had a few sprinklings of snow recently indicating that things up there are getting cooler, along with the daylight hours getting shorter.

Reflecting on this time last year when things were a bit nerve wracking with a closedown of the country and the club not knowing what the future would bring for the lodge. We can move into this winter season with some positivity as we accept the changes that have come to the country.

We are moving forward with winter bookings. To try to cater for everyone we are attempting to attend to both the needs of those who must plan well ahead, and for those who are not able to decide when to make bookings till nearer the time.

On the 1st of May bookings will open for members, and 1st June for non-members. Half the bunks will be released on those dates and the rest will be released progressively as the winter progresses.

For lodge bookings member’s membership status frozen from now. This means that people who are not currently members can still join the club during winter but their non-member status for rates and priority for the lodge will remain until the end of October. So please do not hassle our booking team with excuses if you did not become a club member early enough.

Keep the following dates in mind or, better still, on your calendar:

Friday 9th July to departure Sunday 25th July: school holidays
Sunday 8th August to departure Friday 13th August: Ski Week 1.
The weeks but not the weekends between these dates are already fully booked.

Sunday 13th September to departure Friday 17th September: Ski Week 2
Friday 1st October to Sunday 17th October: school holidays.
We are always looking for helpers and we have been lacking an additional booking officer, and a secretary to take care of the minutes etc. until July or August. We are also requiring people to help with lodge cleaning and food stocking next month (May). This event proves to be a chance to catch up with some key people and is always a bit of work and a lot of fun.😎

The last pics as my stay on the mountain comes to a close. This morning the air was still and clear such that the chopper was working early on the Far West Chair and then in amongst the lodges at the Top of the Bruce. Its been a great break with good company from those that attended Summer Lodge 2020/2021, maybe next year, more will attend as life settles down ???
Egmont, the first time I have seen it this year, through the large window.

The lodge is open with plenty of space for those who would like to enjoy the mountain and what it has to offer.
Open Lodge, this evenings Sunset, after a day of mostly fine weather, a couple of small rain showers in the afternoon, the Sky Waka was running..
Hi all, The lodge is open with space to spare. Today the 3rd day in the new year, the mountains covered in cloud with limited visability.
Just the place to relax and get in a little reading...
Cheers all
What is it like up there, lodgies?
Given recent government announcements, we have made the decision to cancel Wednesday social nights and club trips until further notice. The WTMC Ruapehu Lodge has also been closed until further notice.

We feel it’s important to take a conservative approach for the safety of our members and volunteers and to do our part.

We will provide refunds to anyone who has already paid for a trip. For more information see our website: https://wtmc.org.nz/president/wtmc-covid-19/. We will keep this page up-to-date and also post updates on our page regarding trip refunds, gear, etc.

For many of us, WTMC is an important part of our social lives and getting into the outdoors helps maintain our mental and physical well-being. We encourage people to use the Wellington Tramping & Mountaineering Club (WTMC) Facebook group to connect with others.

WTMC own a comfortable lodge on the slopes of Ruapehu which is available for accommodation year round, just 100m walk from Whakapapa ski field car park.

Operating as usual

Hey folks,

We have some space in the lodge from Monday 19th September to Friday 24th September if a mid week ski getaway sounds appealing.

We're also still looking for a lodge leader for September 24 - 26, anyone interested?

A message from our Lodge Food Team!

Every year a handful of lovely volunteers spend a great weekend at the lodge preparing it for your winter stay. This year you are very much invited as well.

We carpool up the mountain on a Friday afternoon, have a drink and a laugh and tuck in for the night. The next morning our food stock will be dropped off after coffee and we carry it up the hill. This normally takes just about 4 or 5 trips up per person.

The rest of the day is spent in the lodge cleaning and fixing little things to make sure your next holiday in the lodge is as good as ever, or better.

We are working with our supplier to set the date but that will only be definitive in the week of the 27th of April. So please pencil in the following dates in May.
8th and 9th
22nd and 23rd
If you are keen to come, and I know you are, then send a quick email to [email protected] to let us know what date, if you have transport, if you could transport others and where you would be leaving from.

I look forward to seeing you up the mountain.

Fancy leading a weekend at the lodge this year? if so, you get to book in NOW. Email [email protected] if interested (you must be a member and have attended a lodge operator training course)

Ruapehu Mountain Clubs Association

An important Message from DoC

Ruapehu went to VAL 2 today and as a result we are asking people to stay away from the 2km exclusion zone. Below are the key messages we are sharing with concessionaires and directly affected stakeholders.

GNS have advised DOC that Mount Ruapehu will move to Volcanic Alert Level 2 today.
As per DOCs volcanic management plans you are notified that all concession activities are suspended to the summit plateau area, within a 2km from Te Wai ā-moe/Crater Lake.
This area is also closed to members of the public.
Please ensure club members and guests staying in your club are notified and procedures in place if needed for increased activity.
We will provide any updates as we can via RMCA.

Summer lodge runs Dec 26th - Jan 17th! Last year Lodge Custodian Miles spent 3 weeks up the lodge, and posted a blog every day. See the previous post for what he got up to on New Years Day. What will you get up to? (You don't have to stay 3 weeks)

WTMC Ruapehu Lodge

Day Seven.

Welcome to 2020, another full year of making the most of our great NZ outdoors. We are a blessed people here in Aotearoa!

I finished 2019 off in style, having a flash dinner up at the Knoll Ridge Chalet (thanks to my friends) and then playing 500 back at the lodge to see the New Year in (in my case losing 500, thanks to the same friends).

I then started 2020 off in style with doing the Silica Rapids walk with the same friends (all was forgiven concerning the 500 game). I know I did the same walk yesterday, but it is such a great walk. In fact, I would rate it as one of the best ‘short walks’ in our country. Come on up, stay at the club lodge, and do the walk over the next couple of weeks.

As an added bonus, when we came out from the walk, the annual New Year’s Day family fun kite flying event was on at the Chateau. The place was filled with colour!

In the afternoon I took a family staying at the lodge up to the crater, as they had never been there before. This was the same family who had an epic trip to Whakapapaiti hut yesterday. Well, let’s just say, this family breath the word ‘EPIC’. We got there and back, and they have a tale to tell as a result.

To top New Year’s Day off, it was great to welcome someone new to our lodge for tonight. This person isn’t a club member (yet!) but saw our ‘Summer Lodge’ event on social media and booked in a night. Thumbs up for social media!

I hope you all have a good 2020.

Far West T is open! Still got some space for Labour Day weekend - 3 nights for the price of 2!

We're open Labour Day weekend - stay Fri+Sat night, get Sunday night free!
