Ruapehu NZ

While Mount Ruapehu is having a bit of a rumble, Mount Tongariro and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing are NOT affected – these are completely different volcanic systems. So while Mount Ruapehu is at Volcanic Alert 2 and @docgovtnz has closed a 2km radius around the centre of Te Wai ā-moe/Crater Lake, Mount Tongariro and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing remains open. As usual, always prepare for all conditions, stay on marked tracks and follow advice from DOC. There’s plenty to enjoy in our greater outdoors. 🥾 🎒

Department of Conservation

We all love this place, and this summer DOC and Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro are asking Kiwis to help look after and respect the maunga.

Mt Ruapehu

Kia ora,

After a challenging season, we are stoked to announce an extension to our season here at Whakapapa and Tūroa.

Mother Nature has been kind to us over the last couple of days and provided us with a much needed top up of fresh snow. This should equip us for a great second week to the school holidays and some perfect spring skiing conditions.

Tūroa was originally scheduled to close on October 18th, but will now remain open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday's & Mondays until 16th November (conditions permitting)

Upper mountain ski and ride at Whakapapa will be extended from the original closing date of 26th October until 15th November, again conditions permitting.
We may also be able to delay the closure of Happy Valley thanks to the extra snowfall until around 11th October!

The team are working hard to try and open the Far West T Bar for some additional spring terrain! Watch this space and keep an eye on our Report for daily updates.

2021 Season Pass Information

We’re only nine days away from the early bird release of 2021 season passes, on Friday 9th October.

A year like 2020 has tested us all, but has also helped to bring a renewed focus on what your experience should look like in 2021. So, we're taking a little bit more time this year to apply a fresh approach to our pricing, and to introduce some great new features for Season Pass holders.

Keep an eye on your inbox on Monday for more information about the 2021 season and the early bird sale later next week.

Nga mihi,
The Mt Ruapehu Team

Thank you Kiwis Who Fly ❄️❤️

Mt Ruapahu in all its splendor!!!! We are heading up the mountain again tomorrow to snow board. This is gonna be an interesting experience, as I've never boarded before!!!!
We choose to stay close to the source, first two nights at the Skotel Alpine Resort, a very rustic lodge that provides backpackers options and motel like rooms.
Skotel has a full resturant and bar, a spa, sauna, games room, drying room and a small kitchen available.
Edge to Edge is a full ski and snowboard hire shop down stairs, with clothing available as well.
Warm and very cosy, family friendly accommodation close to the snow.

Cable laying by helicopter (1979)
On 17 May 1979 a report entitled “Mount Ruapehu: Cable Laying by Helicopter” was produced by the Hamilton District Engineer’s Office of the Post Office.

The task was to lay telephone cable from the Tararua Tramping Club Hut to the top of the number 2 chairlift. It was decided to use a Llama helicopter, which could lift up to one tonne. However, when the cable was delivered it was found to have been loaded onto heavier drums than expected, and these were over the lifting capacity of the helicopter. The solution was to use two helicopters “joined via wire rope to a boom …. capable of supporting up to 2 tonnes.” For safety either pilot could release the boom if needed.

The cable was fed into a trench, and up to 15 staff worked on the job. “Ideally the speed of laying is about walking speed so the gang can follow the cable. The men should position themselves to be able to see the drum at all times.”

“All flying should be downhill, backwards. The pilots have more control over the load when flying downhill, and it is preferred that the helicopter tail be away from the mountain.”

The report concluded that the job was complicated by the extra weight of the cable drums, which increased the cost and caused delays.
