Tokoroa Alpine club was established in 1969 to encourage tramping, mountaineering, climbing, skiing and alpine activities on Mt Ruapehu. The lodge is located next to the upper Bruce Rd and can comfortably accommodate up to 29 people.
Our preparations for Winter '22 are well underway. This week saw chairs fitted to Whakapapa's Double Happy and West Ridge Quad, with the Delta in the team's sights for next week. This follows on from the maintenance crew's most recent, mammoth task of replacing the bull wheel bearing on the West Ridge Quad, a task only required every 15-20 years.
Accessing the Quad, 2075m above sea level, meant helicoptering in scaffolding, parts, and safety equipment. From there, safety precautions were put in place, the bull wheel effectively split in half through tensioning on ropes, allowing both our maintenance crew and specialists from Doppelmayr to replace the components, before reassembling.
The project required weeks of planning, assessing, and executing. "Nothing is diminutive; everything is enormous. However, it is necessary to ensure everyone's safety. And that is precisely what we do" said Brad Phillips, Head of Maintenance at Whakapapa.
West is definitely best at Whakapapa, and we are so stoked to see the Quad's bull wheel shored up for another 15-20 years.
80 days to go!

The lodge received its usual pre-season spruce up: deep clean, repainted, electrical & plumbing repairs, scrubbed, washed & polished!!
The lodge is now prepped and the count down is on for the impending winter season!

Time to look forward to 2022.
In two hours’ time, at 11am Friday 22 October, we will go live with our Earlybird Season Passes for the 2022 winter season at Mt Ruapehu.
Two ski areas – Whakapapa and Tūroa, 1050 hectares, seventeen lifts, seven terrain parks, eight cafes. New Zealand’s most mighty maunga.
As we did in 2021, we are capping the number of Earlybird Season Passes available for 2022. And with a cap, comes a very real chance of missing out. Don't miss out!
See you at 11am.

Local Paul Beckett having a crack at RAL.
Lets hope things can keep gaining momentum.
The NZ Govt has announced this evening that we are moving to Alert Level 4 at midnight tonight.
The Lodge & all facilities are now closed, with the current lodge guests departing tomorrow morning, or when weather conditions allow.
We will be in a better position tomorrow to pass on more information once we receive advice from RAL & DOC regarding the closure of the Bruce Rd for the duration of the Lockdown period.
The committee have our monthly meeting scheduled for tomorrow evening, we’ll discuss the process for notifying members of the refund procedure if bookings are affected by the lockdown & the general lockdown protocols.
Thank you for all of your support and understanding and stay safe.
Some fun laps to be had & the stoke levels were running high with the crew up the maunga yesterday!
This next weather system looks to be delivery the goods & a clear forecast for this coming weekend will see more stoke for those lucky enough to be up there :-)

Lift timelines here
The maunga has been riding super nice over the last couple of days after last weekends storm.
Rumor on the mountain is that they'll have Knoll Ridge T open this weekend & Far West by Monday!
More snow is forecast for this coming Tuesday, this should set us up for the rest of the season :-)
When the lifts aren’t spinning always mahi to be done at the lodge.
Still need mother nature to kick into gear, but the crew are making good use of these cold nights to crank up the snow guns!
Winter is coming :-)
