Out and about around Discovery on a better weather day
What can you hear ? Turn your volume up.
Around 4:30am from Discovery, before the birds are awake.
On an early run this morning.
Aaaahhh.... the taste of fresh morning mountain air with a generous helping of serenity...
So good for the soul
I strongly disagree with Work Safe laying charges against these helicopter companies or any of the other businesses and organisations.
I am not against the pursuit of high safety standards. Quite the opposite. I am against these businesses and organisations being held to account for what happened as a result of a volcanic eruption, which is an unpredictable natural event. An eruption of White Island or Tongariro's volcanos can happen anytime regardless of the GNS risk level.
I feel for the families who lost loved ones and those who were badly injured. But laying blame for this tragedy is not constructive and not the best way forward.
Guilty verdicts, huge fines, ticked boxes, written procedures, rubber stamps, risk levels, bureaucrats in offices etc cannot ever fully protect people from an unpredictable natural volcanic eruption. The only way to eliminate or minimise this risk is to not go near a volcano.
If Work Safe is successful the outcome will be more misery. The people and businesses involved will be hit even harder than they already have been. A successful prosecution will strengthen and reinforce a dangerous ideology that you as an individual are not responsible for the decisions you make, the places you visit in the great outdoors, and the risks you take.
For businesses and operators it will send a frightening warning that even if you have all the safety measures in place, and have been audited, and you operate to these standards, and something still goes wrong because of the unthinkable, you will be prosecuted.
I'm also afraid that this prosecution will lead to measures which will only further sanitise ever increasing sterile lives many people lead.
Lives without real adventure, without exploration, without pushing limits to see how far one can go. This also would be an unhappy ending.
