Mt Ruapehu, Whakapapa & Tūroa Ski Areas
Thank you to everybody that has made it up to see us since the change last week to Covid-19 Alert Level 2, as we have said before we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to still be operating.
It was touch and go as to whether we would get to the season start line this year, it has been a wild ride since and the last week at Level 2 has added an extra bit to that challenge. We've been really encouraged by the feedback we have had since Thursday and the crew are taking a lot of heart from this.
Online though we are still seeing astonishment and aggravation come through so thought that this honest FAQ might be of help...
1. How is all of the parking gone so quickly?
Because demand is far far greater than what we are able to supply at Alert Level 2. Since Thursday we have reached a maximum number of visitors that we can safely operate with that is no more than 50% of what we could achieve during what you might call "normal" times. And that was with good weather. This week? we are only able to release parking to around 20% of the spaces we physically have with the forecast we are looking at
2. Why can't you just do distancing and max numbers in cafes?
We are doing this and a lot more- but without the "hard" control of limiting people onto the ski areas on the road then this number can get too high as above. The individual ski areas continue to push to maximize this number every moment that they can and if things improve will release more space for you
3. It must be no shows clogging up the system?
Since the change to Alert Level 2 the "no show rate" has been almost non existent. This shows that it is not speculators holding space. Please...no more parochial posts about our friends from Auckland!
4. How does parking actually achieve the capacity intended?
You tell us your planned people per car and we can match it with our SnowCard data. We were pleasantly surprised to see this accuracy actually exceed our expectations! across the thousands of visitors on mountain over the weekend the data match was within 0.4%
5. I can't use my season pass, can I get a refund?
We are still operating at Alert Level 2 which is at this stage indicated at just 10% of the length of our season. If you are at Level 2 and able to travel please consider a shuttle as a back up
If the health outcomes we are all chasing for Aotearoa come to pass then this will all get easier. Please remain patient with us and remember what is important ☃️⛷🥰

😷 Following new government guidelines, we remain open at level 2 but with social distancing measures in place.
☀️ On a positive note, the mountain continues to be up and running and is forecasting a BLUEBIRD weekend. If you’re outside of Auckland, this could be your only chance for a weekend of sunny skies and empty slopes. 🙌🏼

🏞️Tongariro National Park, the oldest national park in New Zealand.
🤩You can hike to the Tama Lakes, take a look at the Taranaki Falls, tramp the Round The Mountain Track, and even have a high tea in the Chateau Tongariro!
🌊You have to visit the Emerald Lakes! It is considered to be the most popular one-day Hike in New Zealand. Their brilliant colors are partly caused by dissolved minerals, washed down from the thermal area of nearby Red Crater.
📣Facts & Tips: In winter, you may need crampons and an ice axe. It is safer to go with a guide in these conditions.
🚙Transportation: The best way to explore the destinations is to get a car and start your road trip from Auckland to Tongariro, via State Highway 1 and SH 4.

Shaping up to be a great weekend ❄️⛷🏂
Great news. There's enough snow now for the mountain team to do the slope preparations.
Today's Whakapapa report:
We have a beautiful fine, clear, & crisp day on the maunga!! The Happy Valley Beginners area is OPEN for skiing, boarding & sledding. The Rangatira is OPEN for the first time this season for lower mountain ski & ride! The Sky Waka is projected to OPEN for SIGHTSEEING ONLY at 11am once it has been de-iced. With the snow received this week we have enough to start pushing trails & the t-line in the Valley. This will progress 24/7 for the next 2-3 days.
Turoa:
Blizzard conditions have brought fresh snowfalls right on cue for Turoa's opening weekend! Operations will kick off this Saturday 11th of July. Our patrol and operations teams are currently assessing resort conditions and building trails in preparation for Saturday morning. Lift facilities will be announced following these assessments and updated on our snow report. Due to significant snowfall, we are anticipating road restrictions (chains on 2WD vehicles) this Saturday. Please remember to buy tickets online before arriving on the mountain.

Who made it up the 🗻 for opening weekend?
🥰
If you're up staying or eating at The Park Hotel this holidays, look out for new firefighters Eugene Gorman; who will be possibly cooking you dinner and Louise; who could be serving it. Here they are pictured with Satbir Singh, duty manager at The Park Hotel Ruapehu.
They're fresh back from recruits course and are a great asset to the crew. And if you're around town and hear the siren go you can watch them sprint down Millar Street for some light entertainment.
Eugene is a keen weightlifter and artist. Check out Eugene Gorman art, his commissions are excellent value. Louise is from France and adds French to Czech, German and Dutch speakers in the crew.
