Could you live in Wellington? π¬οΈ
Throwback to our trip there last year, still one of our favourite spots in NZ. Smaller footprint than Auckland, huge creative energy, proper city buzz, but yes, the wind and hills are real.
A few honest notes if Wellingtonβs on your radar:
π‘ The cable car up to the Botanic Gardens is a must, cheap and gives you the best view of the harbour
π¦ Wellington Zoo is a great half-day if youβve got kids
ποΈ Te Papa Museum is free and genuinely world-class
π¬οΈ The wind is not a meme, itβs real, pack accordingly
Full suburb comparisons (Wellington included) are in the SaffaSettle toolkit. Link in bio.

Immigration NZ just put out a genuinely useful explainer on skilled residence pathways π
This is exactly the kind of thing we point people to instead of guessing. Weβre not visa advisors, so when it comes to pathways, requirements, and eligibility, the official INZ source is always the one to trust, not us, not Facebook groups, not βsomeone told me.β
Worth a watch if residency pathways are on your radar.

The Digital Migration Toolkit for South Africans moving to NZ is finally live π

What a week's groceries actually costs in NZ π
This is the one that catches South Africans off guard. Not rent, not petrol. The weekly shop.
π A family spends roughly $200β$280/week on groceries alone (not takeaways).
π§ Butter sits around $10. In the world's biggest dairy exporting country. Yes, really.
π‘ Switching to Pak'nSave from New World or Woolworths saves most families $15β$30 a shop. Over a year that's real money.
π Meal planning and a list cuts most households' spend by 15β20%.
We budgeted for groceries before we moved, but the pace at which prices have climbed still caught us off guard. And judging by the posts I keep seeing from other Saffa families here, we're not alone in feeling the squeeze. This isn't about poor planning. It's just how fast the cost of living moves.
There's a full budget planner inside the SaffaSettle toolkit, built on real, current NZ costs, so at least you're not budgeting blind before you land.

What surprised you most about NZ grocery prices? π
Why we chose Napier π
When we left Cape Town, we could've landed anywhere in NZ. We chose Napier β and four years in, it's been the right call for our family.
βοΈ The pull: sunshine, the coast, Art Deco charm, and an easy, low-traffic pace. Median rent sits around $640/week.
π² The everyday stuff: an easy, outdoors kind of life β bikes, beaches, and space for the kids to just be kids. That freedom is hard to put a price on.
π© A local highlight: Napier hosts NZ's iconic Art Deco Festival every year β vintage cars, period dress, the lot. It's one of the country's most unique events, right on our doorstep.
The honest bit: Napier's a small city and the job market is tighter than Auckland or Wellington. But for family life? Hard to beat.
We break down the suburbs in detail inside the SaffaSettle toolkit.

Which NZ city are you considering? π
Just posted on Instagram πΈ
6 CV mistakes South Africans make when applying for NZ jobs.
If you're job hunting here, you're probably making these:
β Oversharing personal details
β Including irrelevant fluff
β Using buzzwords instead of proof
β Using SA terminology without context
β Complex designs
β Not tailoring for each role

Welcome to SaffaSettle! πΏπ¦π³πΏ
I'm Abie. In 2021, we moved from Cape Town to Napier, NZ.
What followed were the same questions from friends, family, and strangers: "What was required to move?" "Which suburb has good schools?" "What does it actually cost to settle?"
After hearing these questions so many times, I organised everything we've learned and researched into one place.
Some of it's free. Some of it's in the Complete Toolkit. Either way, I'm here to help.
This page is for South Africans planning a move to New Zealand. We'll share real migration stories and everything else that made our move easier.
