HAVE YOU HAD COVID ??
Are you thinking about returning to sport or activity?
Returning to activity following Covid-19 infection takes a gradual and individualised approach.
With risk of cardiovascular, renal, respiratory and hematological complications, it’s best to follow steady resumption of training, paying attention to physical and psychological factors after COVID-19 infection.
It's important to remember is that it's never good to exercise when you are unwell. If you exercise with a viral infection this may cause the infection to get worse and prolong your symptoms.
GRADUATED RETURN TO PLAY (GRTP) PROTOCOL -
A GRTP is a progressive programme that introduces physical activity and sport in a stepwise fashion.
Key considerations -
- Before considering GRTP, the athlete must be able to complete activities of daily living and walk 500 m on the flat without excessive fatigue or breathlessness.
- They should have at least 10 days’ rest and be 7 days symptom-free before starting.
- Less aerobically intense sports like walking and golf may progress quicker and are recommended over higher intensity activity. Experience suggests that some athletes take over 3 weeks to recover.
- Start slowly (often at 50% reduction of previous activity) and build up gradually - increasing by no more than 10% each week
Daily post activity monitoring will add value, which could include -
• Resting heart rate.
• Rated perceived exertion (RPE)
• Sleep, stress, fatigue and muscle soreness.
• Injury-Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport.
If any symptoms occur (including excessive fatigue) while going through GRTP, the athlete must return to the previous stage and progress again after a minimum of 24 hours’ period of rest without symptoms.
Athletes with comorbidities -
Athletes diagnosed with COVID-19 and who have medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or renal disease should have a medical assessment before commencing GRTP.
Further assessments -
Athletes who have a complicated or prolonged COVID-19 illness may need further investigations, including
- Blood testing for markers of inflammation
- Cardiac monitoring
- Respiratory function assessment
- Renal and hematological monitoring.
It’s important to remember that each person is an individual and that you will need to monitor your progress and body closely paying attention to your symptoms when you are active (and following your session)
LONG COVID -
Return to activity for people who are suffering long covid will be different and we recommend a consultation with a sports physician to ensure this is monitored closely and individually prescribed.

It's the simple things and kind gestures that make you smile when everything around you feels a bit overwhelming.
Today one of Wairarapa Sports Podiatry s patients brought Anna and Bernie in a pair of super cool earrings (made of lego!)
Such a simple gesture that was so appreciated, with a very powerful message.
We'll be wearing them proudly in support of the people of Ukraine 💙💛
And last week we received another gorgeous bunch of flowers from a patient from Wairarapa Osteopathy. A truly talented lady who's bunches last so long and brighten up our day the moment we walk in the door. https://www.facebook.com/Wairarapa-Osteopathy-401734523891912/
We love our community and our awesome patients !! ❤

Look for the helpers 🥰
If you find yourself in a place where things just seem so bleak, remember there are always helpers.
Everywhere you look there are people reaching out to help, spread love and show us that in times of disaster, war or a pandemic there is always more good in the world ❤️
If there is someone you know that may be feeling overwhelmed with what is happening around the world at the moment, take a moment to share this with them. It may help them or their loved ones find some light in what has been very dark lately.

Hey everyone,
As we transition into the RED Traffic Light setting there are a few things we will be focussing on at The Core. The main focus will be on reducing the risk of transmission of Covid 19 and in particular Omicron.
One of the best things you can do to protect yourself (and those around you) is to wear a correctly fitted mask with adequate filtration. We often see people not wearing their mask correctly and this increases our risk as a close contact business.
Here is a simple video attached from the WHO on how to wear your mask properly for you to have a quick check.
As an essential services we ask that you think of your practitioner when you come into The Core and ensure that you have your mask on, that it's fitted correctly around your face with no gaps and that it covers all of your nose, mouth and is ideally of a recommended standard.
A N95 or equivalent is your best protection, then a correctly fitted surgical mask and then a 3 layered cloth mask in order of protection level.
In addition to the above ensuring that you are signing in with your QR code and sanitising your hands on arrival and leaving.
We also ask that you stay well behind the reception desk so as not to lean over while paying and maintain a 1 metre distance between others in the waiting room.
Please only arrive only a few minutes before your appointment so we reduce the number of people in the shared space.
And of course if you have been at any locations of interest, are waiting a covid test or have any symptoms please DO NOT come into the building. Please contact us and we will happily reschedule your appointment for you.
We are all small businesses that rely on having our staff healthy and well and by playing your part in reducing the risk of spread we can play our part in your health and wellness.
Thanks so much,
The team at The Core
How to properly fit your mask During the COVID-19 pandemic, a properly fitted mask reduces your risk of COVID-19. Know your risk, lower your risk. For more information: www.who.int/epi-win
