The staff at Alzheimers Gisborne Tairawhiti have an ongoing commitment Te Tiriti o Waitangi. At least once a year we participate in some professional development to increase awareness and knowledge of Te Tiriti. Last week we had a beautiful and inciteful presentation shared with us from Tui Keenan about how she views te ao Maori. Kia ora Tui. We were privileged that you shared you journey with us. Nga mihi mahana😘

We were delighted when a year 7 student from Gisborne Intermediate contacted us about a leadership group she was a part of with a requirement that she give something back to the community. Charlotte chose us to bake a banana loaf for to be shared with the clients in the Sherwood Club.😍 What a wonderful programme to promote leadership in our community👍. Thank you Charlotte for choosing us. You certainly did contribute to us having a great day🥰

Worlds Alzheimers Month is coming up!!
World Alzheimers Month is an international campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. Things like being talked about as though you are not in the room, or handed a diagnosis and told to pack up your life as if you have no future.
The impact of dementia is growing each year, and affects people of all ages and walks of life. We think it’s time dementia was top of mind. That’s where World Alzheimers Month comes in, and why we would love it if you could join us to spread the word.
During September, a whole host of activities will be taking place. There are lots of ways to get involved and take action.
Follow us to keep in the loop ✅

The most common symptons
The early signs and symptoms of dementia can be subtle and hard to recognise.
Many conditions, such as stroke, depression and infections, as well as normal ageing, can cause dementia-like symptoms. It’s important not to assume any changes are due to dementia.
It’s very important to see a GP if you have concerns that you or someone you know may have dementia.
If the symptoms are caused by a treatable condition, they can be diagnosed and treated. If the symptoms are caused by dementia, an early diagnosis means early access to support, information, and any appropriate medication will be available, and there will be time to plan for the future.
Check out the video below about the most common symptoms:

Music accesses different parts of the brain than language, so music can be used to communicate or engage with someone who has been diagnosed with dementia, even if they no longer speak or respond to other people’s words.
Playing soothing music to a person may inspire an emotional reaction in them. Playing music that meant something to them, such as a favourite song, a piece of music from their wedding, or a tune they used to sing to their children, can tap into powerful memories and emotions.
What are the benefits?
• Music helps people with dementia express feelings and ideas.
• Music can help the person connect with others around them.
• It can encourage social interaction and promotes activity in groups.
• It can reduce social isolation.
• It can facilitate physical exercise and dance or movement.

Party preparations🎊
Alzheimers Gisborne Tairawhiti started off over 30 years ago by offering an activities based programme for people with dementia to support them and their care partners to slow the progression of the disease and provide them with a better quality of life. This operated out of a variety of church halls and people's homes until, thirty years ago, we moved into our current facilities at the hospital, and the Sherwood Club was born. We are getting ready for our party on 22 July to celebrate.🥳 Here we are making the decorations🤩
