Seven things you can do in your 60s to enjoy a better life for longer

A major study this month suggests that switching to a healthier diet, even in your sunset years, can add a decade to your life.

Last year, a study from Johns Hopkins University in the United States tracked more than 6000 people, aged 44 to 84, for more than seven years. Those who made good-for-you changes such as quitting smoking, following a Mediterranean-style diet, getting regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight, decreased their risk of death in the time period by 80 per cent!

Seven things you can do in your 60s to enjoy a better life for longer Forget the seven signs of ageing, Luke Mintz has seven tips you can do in your 60s to enjoy a better life for longer.

Sleep: here's how much you really need for optimal cognition and wellbeing

Most of us struggle to think well after a poor night’s sleep – feeling foggy and failing to perform at our usual standard at school, university or work. You may notice that you’re not concentrating as well, or that your memory doesn’t seem up to scratch. Decades of bad sleep, however, may potentially lead to cognitive decline. 👇 👇 👇

Budgeting and healthy eating | Health Navigator NZ

"If you’ve carefully planned your weekly meals, the temptation to eat out is greatly diminished. Knowing that you have the ingredients on hand to whip up a healthy meal feels great. These days, eating out is expensive and you don’t always know what’s in your food. The same goes for buying coffee – think about how much it adds up over a year if you buy takeaway coffee every day. Make it yourself and put that money towards the grocery bill."

Why holding back your urge to poop can wreak havoc on your insides – a gastroenterologist explains 19/05/2022

Why holding back your urge to poop can wreak havoc on your insides – a gastroenterologist explains

habitually putting off the urge to poo and slowing the bowel “transit time” may be associated with a higher risk of problems such as bowel cancer, diverticulosis (small pouches of the bowel lining protruding through the bowel wall), haemorrhoids and anal tears, and prolapse.

That’s why the golden rule of gastroenterology is to always heed the “call to stool” when the urge strikes! 💩 💩 💩

Four strange COVID symptoms you might not have heard about 16/05/2022

Four strange COVID symptoms you might not have heard about

With the rise of new variants, the symptoms of COVID have also evolved. Initially, the NHS regarded a fever, cough, and loss or change in sense of smell or taste as the main symptoms which could indicate COVID infection. Now, recently updated NHS guidance suggests also looking out for symptoms including a sore throat, blocked or runny nose, and a headache.

But what about some of the more obscure signs and symptoms? From skin lesions to hearing loss, emerging data is increasingly showing us that COVID symptoms can go beyond what you might expect from a regular cold or a flu. 👇 👇

Four strange COVID symptoms you might not have heard about Well over two years into the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of COVID cases continue to be recorded around the world every day.

Bowel Cancer - Family Health Diary 12/05/2022

Bowel Cancer - Family Health Diary

New Zealand has one of the highest bowel cancer rates in the world with over 1200 people dying every year of the disease. Scientists are still unsure why this is – it has been raised that our love of red meat, processed foods and foods that are high in animal fat could be contributors. There are other risk factors to developing bowel cancer such as drinking alcohol, smoking, being overweight, a diet low in fruit and vegetables, inflammatory bowel disease, and lack of exercise as well as genetic factors.

It is very important to remember that there is a much greater chance of successful treatment if bowel cancer is detected in the early stages. Follow up early on any health niggles and if you are within the eligible age group and your District Health Board is part of the NBSP, make sure that you do your bowel screening test.

Did you know the Ministry of Health is encouraging all health and disability sector employees to get immunised against flu (influenza) to protect themselves and the patients and clients they care for?

This year, in the context of the borders re-opening and the continued threat of COVID-19, we’re aiming for at least 80% of the health sector workforce to be vaccinated against influenza.

The Ministry will reimburse employers of patient- and client-facing health care workers including:
• General practice
• Private hospitals
• Disability services
• Pharmacies
• Aged residential care facilities
• Hauora Māori and Pacific health practices

Guidance on applying for a reimbursement can be found here. https://lnkd.in/gwZyz6Wj

Did you know you can return expired or unused medicines to your pharmacy?

If you have unwanted medicines (including medicines for pets), the safest way to dispose of them is to return them to your pharmacy. This is a free service.

Our wastewater systems are not designed to cope with medicine waste. If medicines get into waterways or the soil, they can harm animals. Some medicines can change the reproduction of aquatic creatures, change their physiology or change their behaviour.

Any medicine that is returned to a community pharmacy is not reused for anyone else. This is because the quality, safety and efficacy of the medicine cannot be checked.
