This section of SH2, between Matawai and Waioeka, remains CLOSED. Expect until the road can be fully open.

The road is CLOSED between Matawai and Waioeka. Avoid this area and consider delaying your journey. ^SG

Update for road closure from NZ Police.

State Highway 2, Matawai Road, between Gisborne (from the intersection with Back Ormond Road) and Opotiki has been closed.
Multiple slips along the length of the road will need to be cleared.
Roading crews have been deployed to assess and clear the obstructions.
There is no time scale available for this closure due to the number of slips and obstructions.
Motorists are requested to take an alternative route where possible or delay their travel.

Kia Ora e te whanau, the Waioweka Gorge is temporarily closed due to a slip fully covering the road around the Wairata area. Please avoid travel until roads reopen. We will keep you posted.

We’ve got ourselves an ORANGE 🍊 heavy 🌧️ warning for Tairāwhiti, north of Tolaga Bay for the 12 hours from midnight tonight through to noon tomorrow (Wednesday) .
MetService say to expect 70-100mm of rain with peak rates of 15-25mm/hr on Wednesday morning 🌞.
Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive 🚗 cautiously.

‼️MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm watch 👀for the southwest of Tairāwhiti. ⛈ This watch is effective from today (Monday, 21st) 1 PM until 9 PM.
These storms may be accompanied by localised downpours with rainfall rates of 25 to 40 mm/h and hail
If you are travelling, please be aware that other areas, including Rotorua, the inland Bay of Plenty, Taupo, Hawke's Bay, and Taihape, may also be affected.

* Expect 150-200mm of rain with peak rates of 15-20mm/hr.

⚠️ No surprises here whānau . . . we’ve got ourselves an ORANGE 🍊 heavy rain 🌧️ warning for the Tairāwhiti region NORTH of Tokomaru Bay.
MetService have said the rain 🌧️ warning is in place for the 27 hours from 9pm tomorrow (THURSDAY) through to midday Saturday. Expect 150-2000mm of rain with peak rates of 15-20mm/hr expected on Friday.
Streams and rivers may rise rapidly with a possibility of surface flooding, slips and difficult driving 🚗 conditions.

We’ve got a YELLOW heavy rain 🌧️ watch incoming whānau, from 8am tomorrow (Thursday) to noon on Friday covering the Wairoa district and Tairāwhiti from Tolaga Bay south. Rain 🌧️ amounts may approach warning ⚠️ criteria so make sure your gutters are cleared and stay off the roads if you can.
The severe weather warning is driven by a persistent southeasterly flow coming up the country.

⚠️ ORANGE heavy rain warning in place from 9pm Sunday through to 9pm Monday.
⚠️ Expect 100-120mm of rain with peak rates of 10-15mm/hr expected Monday morning and afternoon.
⚠️ Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips and difficult driving conditions are possible.
⚠️ Clear your drains and gutters. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.
⚠️ MetService say there is a minimal chance of it being upgraded to a RED warning.

🟠ORANGE HEAVY RAIN WARNING🟠
⚠️ We’ve got rain 🌧️ incoming whānau, and quite a lot of it! ⚠️
MetService have just issued an ORANGE 🍊 heavy rain ☔️ warning for Gisborne/Tairāwhiti for the 16 hours from 4pm this afternoon through to 8am tomorrow (Wednesday).
Expect 80-100 mm of rain 🌧️, especially around and north of Gisborne City, with peak intensities of 10-15 mm per hour likely, especially this evening and early tomorrow morning.
Streams and rivers may rise rapidly and expect surface flooding and slips with difficult driving 🚗 conditions.
Make sure your drains and gutters are clear. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.
It’s all being driven by a low that’s moving down the country. This low and its associated fronts bring heavy rain and easterly gales to part of the North Island.
