We are seeking to appoint awesome Literacy and Numeracy Kaiako- Tutors for our Gisborne Delivery Site.

Literacy Aotearoa delivers accessible quality programmes designed to ensure the peoples of Aotearoa are critically literate and able to realise their full social, cultural, and economic potential.

We are seeking applications from experienced literacy and numeracy tutors for a number of part-time, casual or fixed term positions in our Gisborne delivery Site covering the Gisborne and Tairawhiti communities.

Programmes are provided at no direct cost to the learner, and builds on their knowledge and experiences to enhance their confidence and capabilities. Learners celebrate their successes and achievements, growing their independence, confidence and resilience.

You will be part of a national team of educators who are passionate in their understanding that increased literacy and numeracy skills leads to increased opportunities, including employment and further education for learners, and potentially their whānau, families and communities.

Literacy Aotearoa is committed to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, working to a strong value base, and contributing to the wellbeing of our learners, our communities, and our country.

Reporting to the Site Coordinator, the Kaiako - Tutor is responsible for delivering Literacy Aotearoa programmes to learners who seek to increase their literacy and numeracy competencies. Programmes and resources are provided but you will need to ensure that they match the needs of the learners you work with, and when necessary, seek alternative resources, appropriate to their needs.
Opportunities to deliver programmes across the wider Waikato region may become available.

Casual/fixed-term tutor positions may lead to permanent part-time positions.

You will need to:

Hold a literacy and numeracy qualification (either NZCALNE [Voc] L5 or NZCATT L4), or similar;

Have proven experience in delivering literacy and numeracy teaching;

Need to demonstrate a commitment to the kaupapa to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi;

Flexibility in tuition delivery (days and times) will be viewed favourably.

Programmes are delivered in groups of learners, and face-to-face. Literacy Aotearoa is also able to deliver programmes using multiple online platforms, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

You will also need to have:

Flexibility to deliver daytime or evening classes;

Digital competency in working with Zoom, Microsoft Office 365 and online learning platforms;

Ability to interact with learners of differing knowledge levels and skills;

Knowledge of how to deliver and assess unit standards, or be willing to undertake training to achieve unit standards 4098, 11551 and 11552;

Experience in engaging with Māori, Pasifika and at-risk youth in education;

Experience assessing and working with young people and adults who have not previously had education success.

This year’s theme for Faahi Tapu he Vagahau Niue – Niue Language Week is - Fakatūleva e Vagahau Niue mo e Tau Aga Fakamotu ma e Tau Atuhau, which means - Sustain Niue Language and Culture for Future Generations.

The Niue people have reached a crossroad where the status of the Vagahau Niue is considered most vulnerable.

Vagahau Niue has been registered with UNESCO as an endangered language, so one of the challenges we face is the preservation of Vagahau Niue and Niue culture.

Uike Kātoanga'i 'o e Lea Faka-Tonga (Tonga Language Week) is on from Sunday 4 September to Saturday 10 September 2022. The theme is: Ke Tu'uloa 'a e lea faka-Tonga 'i Aotearoa, which means Sustaining the Tonga Language in Aotearoa.
