Eastern Whio Link
We are a hunter, fisher and Tangata Whenua led Whio conservation project in the Upper Waioeka between Gisborne and Opotiki.
Winners of the 2021 Biosecurity Awards Community Award.

When people ask where you can find ???
Well we are somewhere between Opotiki and Gisborne.
Our Northern boundary is Wairata, our Western boundary is Te Urewera and our Eastern Boundary is the Hinetapuarau Pou near Matawai.
Have you seen our signs as you drive through the gorge?

A huge thank you to our amazing jobs for nature team who have delivered an incredible project over the last 4 years.
A special thank you to our incredible project manager .henare who has done a stellar job managing this project we don’t know what we would have done without you. Your positive can do attitude, commitment to our wider community and leadership in the Taiao space is second to none.
To our team Carl, Jodie, Geoff, Lara and Jayden thank you for your commitment to doing the hard yards. The stoats, cats and other predators you removed from our ecosystem has meant that the Whio are now flourishing and Kiwi are even on the increase.
We appreciate you all.
The future looks bright with our transition out of jobs for nature retaining some of our staff as contractors and much of the maintenance work being delivered by our dedicated volunteers.
We are really grateful for the opportunity jobs for nature has given the project to grow and succeed but mostly we are grateful for the people.

We had Sasha and on the traps up at Journeys End this weekend.
Clearing out traps as they hunted.
With the weather cooling down and food becoming more scarce we are starting to catch plenty of rats in the traps.
What legends.

Things are pretty simple on …
Just a series of equations.
We shoot venison which feeds our trappers, the offcuts from the meat we use to bait our stoat traps.
The stoat traps catch stoats which protect the Whio allowing them to breed successfully.
We reckon that little equation makes hunting a pretty useful tool when it comes to achieving conservation goals and outcomes.

Hashtags for attention:

Whio, trappers, deer…
Three things that go together on

Another stoat tucked away as a tail in a trapper’s memory bank…
How many lives are we responsible for taking…
How many lives have we saved?
The ledger that keeps a man awake at night thinking.
When the rains pelting on the tin roof so hard it threatens to come through…
The coldness only just kept at bay by a raging log fire.
Yep trappings not an easy job, but a man knew that signing on.
The physical works not so bad…
It’s just the dark thinking that gets to a him after too many cold, lonely nights with no one but a dog to talk to…
A man’s good when his hands are busy.
But when they sit idle, the thoughts start to seep in.
Mental health is no joke in our rural communities.
It always pays to ask a mate how he’s doing twice I reckon.
“How you going fella?”
“Living the dream” comes the stoic and somewhat ironic reply.
“Nah, but how you doing really.”
Gets old mate to open up a little…
Well that’s what I reckon anyway.
