Ways to give —

👪 Community Foundations are designed to pool donations into a coordinated investment and dedicated primarily to the social improvement of a specific place.

💱 It is really simple — you give a gift, that gift is invested and grown, and all the income earned goes to causes you love. It is an innovative, sustainable way of creating community-led growth that we fully support.

🥝Here in Aotearoa, we have organisations like Community Foundations NZ, who oversee 17 groups and are well placed to advice on where best to give. At BDO Gisborne, we believe that our people and local community are at the forefront of our culture. We are extremely passionate about making a difference and backing our people to ensure they succeed and realise their full potential.

Giving back to our community is indeed something close to our heart, and we have a deep sense of commitment and responsibility to the region in which we live, work and play.

Pictured below in the following photos are:
1. Members of our BDO Operations (Rayna McKenzie & Sara Murray) and People & Performance (Linda Paulson) teams presenting our beautiful Christmas care package to Linda Coulston and Erina Torrey from SuperGrans Tairawhiti Trust.
2. At our recent staff Christmas morning tea, our staff were greeted with a presentation from Kerry Taggart, Marketing Manager, The Sunrise Foundation, regarding the wonderful work Sunrise does locally within our region.

In the spirit of Christmas, each staff member was given the opportunity to select a charity amongst the endowment funds that Sunrise looks after, to which our Partner group will "pay forward" a donation on behalf of all staff. Check out the recent Gisborne Herald article for more details: http://www.gisborneherald.co.nz/local-news/20201223/bdo-staff-bring-some-christmas-cheer-to-foundation/

Ka rawe!

In early 2020 our donation through The Sunrise Foundation helped build a stretcher ramp in the Trust Tairāwhiti Rescue Helicopter hangar for patients to be lifted and transferred more easily. The service completes on average 200 lifesaving missions each year to some of NZ’s most remote locations.

It's times like these that charitable organisations need us more than ever.

FUNDERS' FORUM 2020

Here's a recap from Glenda Stokes from The Sunrise Foundation about funding available for our community.

This Funders' Forum was available to the public last Wednesday (June 3rd) through a Zoom registration link.

We consolidated points here🎥, but for more info go to https://www.sunrisefoundation.org.nz/ 🙂

The Sunrise Foundation

The Sunrise Foundation is an organisation for local people to give for local needs, to help build a strong future for Tairāwhiti-Gisborne forever.

The Sunrise Foundation is a simple and lasting way to support local charities, organisations and causes that are important to you.

The Sunrise Foundation was launched by Sir Stephen Tindall in October 2014. Although new to New Zealand, community foundations are the fastest growing form of philanthropy worldwide and have been operating for over 100 years in North America. The strength of the endowment model is that all donations and bequests are held as permanent endowments. Funds are invested and each year enough is retained to ensure that endowments grow in line with inflation, the surplus investment income is available as grants to charities and organisations in our local community.

10/08/2021

As a community foundation Sunrise can only retain a maximum of one percent of endowment value each year to cover operating costs.

Until we grow endowments to where we are self-sufficient we are fortunate to have the generous support of our funders Trust Tairāwhiti and Clark Charitable Trust; Gold sponsors Amber Dental, Bayleys Gisborne, Larsen Sawmilling and Self-Storage Gisborne; and numerous organisations and volunteers that have helped us along the way.

We appreciate the immense support we receive from so many as we strive to build a powerful taonga (treasure) for our community for generations to come.

Sunrise trustee, Dame Bronwen Holdsworth, established the Arts Fund, which has also been supported by trustee June Hall.
As a musician herself Dame Bronwen believes “vibrancy and diversity of the arts is a vital component in enhancing the cultural, social and economic life of our community”.
“Creativity is an integral part of every aspect of our lives, through all stages of education, culture and technology. I want to support the talent in our region who are contributing to the wealth and diversity of our magnificent artistic and cultural traditions.”
Dame Bronwen hopes other lovers of the arts will join her and June Hall and donate to the Arts Fund.

Our marketing manager, Kerry Taggart, donates each pay day to the Ngatapa Rugby and Associated Sports Club fund through Sunrise Workplace Giving.

Kerry says “Ngatapa is a family orientated club, my kids love it, so it was a no brainer for me to donate my workplace giving to them."

She gives $10 a week, which she says she "doesn't even notice, but that’s $520 a year that’s helping to build a fund for Ngatapa’s future.”

“I work part-time and have two teenagers, and they cost me a lot of money! I don’t have the means to make large donations so I give a little bit each week."

"It’s incredible that in the time I’ve been with Sunrise I’ve donated $2,700 without even realising it or feeling the pinch."

Kerry also donates annually to the fund for Poverty Bay
A&P Association by adding an extra donation when she does her membership subs.

If you want to support Eastwoodhill Arboretum now is the time to do so.

Not only will your donation be doubled but you will also recieve 1/3 of your donation back as a tax rebate.

In a generous show of support JN Williams Memorial Trust will match any donation to Eastwoodhill's legacy fund at Sunrise $-4-$.

For example, if you donate $1000 to Eastwoodhill's fund at Sunrise before 31 March, JN Williams will match you $-4-$ and add another $1000. With it being the end of the financial year you'll receive a tax rebate of $333.

So in effect you will have donated $666 for Eastwoodhill's future, but the total amount added to their fund will be $2000.
