Several evenings a week, Treble Cafe will host the community for free kai, and on the weekend, will send out Donna’s caravan to park up and offer free food in various locations, such as Waikirikiri Park and Elgin.
Born and bred in Turanganui-a-Kiwa, Donna has worked in hospitality most of her life, starting out at the age 16 as a kitchen hand. Donna was nearly a decade at McDonald’s, working her way up to manager. She has always wanted to open a cafe, but it just never quite came together, and about three years ago she purchased a caravan instead. Operating as Crema35, Donna’s business thrived serving at events. Since the onset of the pandemic the caravan has been mostly sitting idle, but is ready to spring back into action.
Nathan and Mikayla are Lytton high school sweethearts and now have 4 children. They’ve had a busy year, not just with the cafe but also creating a whole other business called Kingdom Mahi, where Nathan devotes most of his time, recruiting and managing workers for the orchards. Kingdom Mahi launched just before the real work on the cafe began, and its early success is what enabled them to finance the cafe.
Helping those in need is a cause close to their hearts. They saw firsthand the struggles families face in their work as youth mentors in Kaiti, and it wasn’t long ago that their whanau needed a little help themselves. Before their latest projects took flight and turned their situation around, they received food parcels from House of Breakthrough. Now that they’re able to, Nathan and Mikayla are eager to give back.
Approaching Donna with their cafe idea, it seemed the perfect opportunity to combine their strengths, “We thought, ‘let’s just do it together.’ My son’s vision is really hitting home for me. If we can do anything to help hungry families, I’m all for it.” Donna contributes not just her caravan, but also her kai. In her caravan she started out with a focus on drinks like coffee, shakes and bubble tea, but quickly expanded to include baked treats, hot dogs and nachos. The cafe will build on those offerings, with healthy options such as salads too.
Mikayla acknowledges the stigma that can come with accepting free food. To combat that, she wants the free kai evenings to feel more like a community event, with an emphasis on bringing people together to mingle. And she emphasises, “we just want to feed hungry people. Hungry doesn’t mean homeless. Lots of people who aren’t homeless are still struggling.” They plan to always offer a couple of free kai options, to enable the dignity of choice.
Mikayla has also put a lot of thought into making Treble Cafe a beautiful space. It occupies the former site of Robert Harris coffee, but if you knew it then, you’d hardly recognize it now. The team have spent months making big changes like moving the kitchen, painting and brightening, and creating a play area for tamariki. The result feels light and airy and wholly welcoming!
In addition to the design, Mikayla spearheads nearly all the business management of the cafe, including planning, marketing and budgeting. “She’s the brains, this one,” says Donna, “she’s even teaching me.” Mikayla is eager to share those skills as well, and envisions holding training sessions at the cafe. “The future plan is to eventually hold classes on budgeting and menu planning so people don’t stay in the cycle of needing to come for free kai.” Donna would like to offer barista training.
As the word gets out, Treble Cafe’s vision is already inspiring support from others in the community. When East Coast Coffee learned about their plans, they donated a coffee filter set up to the cafe, which will be used to provide “community coffee.” The cafe will have filter coffee brewing throughout the day that people can come in and grab for koha. The hope is that money from the community coffee will go to yet another envisioned project of providing food parcels, to deliver directly to those who find it difficult to seek out their food, like older people. Mikayla plans to set up a survey for people to use to nominate recipients.
As impactful as feeding people is, Treble Cafe’s vision is much bigger than that. Mikayla explains that “it’s about empowering people, trying to uplift them into a better situation. Whatever we can do to help, we’ll try and make it work.”

Opening Hours are 7:30am - 2:30pm Tuesday to Saturday, with free kai in the evenings 5:30 - 7pm a few times a week.
