Beautiful story in the National Geographic with Graeme Atkins and other key iwi members from Ngāti Porou about the massive challenges and opportunities in Tairawhiti and why it’s so important iwi-led projects are supported.
“You can’t plant a forest without first healing the mauri, and this is the heart of the people, the history, and the whenua”, says Matawhero Lloyd. “We are the generation of hope.”
“We think in generations, not in quarterly reports.” That isn’t a cheerful bonfire, it’s a massive cleanup operation. In Tairāwhiti the beaches are smothered in dead wood. Mountains are sliding into rivers; forests swarm with possums. While officials demur, transfixed by the bottom line, the people who belong to this land are moving home—and wo...

"One of the marae that people will be visiting [in the Tairāwhiti Ngutukākā festival] is Anaura Bay - a "postcard bay", it really is.
It was October 21st 1769 that the crew from the Endeavour encountered ngutukākā for the first time all those years ago.
They noticed they were growing around "the native's dwellings" (those were their words).
We planted some [ngutukākā] back at that marae three years ago, and they look beautiful.
[Come and] hear the korero from the locals about that time when the Endeavour was in the bay, the relationship between two cultures meeting for the first time and the role that these plants played in that first meeting." - Graeme Atkins
Huge thanks to RNZ and Paddy Gower for the chance to talk to te motu about the inaugural Tairawhiti Ngutukākā festival 18 to 21 September 2024.
The mission to get ngutukaka flourishing in the East Coast wild Graeme Atkins is on a mission to protect endangered plants on the North Island's East Coast, in particular the beautiful, bright red ngutukaka - or kakabeak - of which only 100 plants survive in the wild.

Ngutukaka and its time in the sun.💖

Tickets include:
⭐️ one night of accomodation and evening meal at Tikapa marae in Ruatoria;
⭐️ a tour of the home garden of 2024 Ministry for the Environment Environmental Hero of the Year finalist Graeme Atkins
⭐️ a talk and meal back at Tikapa marae
⭐️ a full day bus tour of some of the key points of ngutukākā-based interest along state highway 35 between Tolaga Bay and Anaura Bay.
There will be opportunities to plant ngutukākā, see first-hand and understand the impact of and recovery from Cyclones Hale and Gabrielle, and get to know members of the local community, the Tairāwhiti Ngutukākā team and like-minded individuals passionate about Indigenous-led restoration of te taiao.
Come hang with us for a few days and enjoy the sight of our critically-endangered ngutukākā not just surviving but thriving in the short time our project has been up and running.
There'll be time to listen to, meet with and share knowledge, mātauranga and time with other native plant enthusiasts and experts who have dedicated their lives to the preservation and protection of Tairāwhiti's natural environment.
Learn how you can support our kaupapa in our quest to get ngutukākā off the endangered species list once and for all, return our beloved state highway 35 to the abundance it enjoyed in the days of our tīpuna, and raise the next generation of kaitiaki in the process.
