Harmans congratulates Gemma Steenhauer of Buller High School, the latest recipient of the Anna MacGougan Memorial Law Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to the top applicant pupil from Buller High who is going on to study law at university. It commemorates another Buller graduate, Anna MacGougan, who had worked with us at Harmans but who tragically died from illness at a relatively young age. Harmans, along with two other law firms (and Anna’s husband Greg) are delighted to contribute to this scholarship to assist each recipient with the costs associated with studying away from home and to encourage bright young West Coasters to follow their dreams and become a lawyer – as Anna did many years ago.

Introducing Tom Mohammed!

We would like to introduce you to our Graduate Solicitor, Tom Mohammed, who was admitted to the bar on the 30th of October. One of our Partners, Alan Prescott, was Tom’s moving counsel on the day.

Tom works in our busy Commercial and Property Law Team located in the City. Even though he has only just been admitted as a lawyer, he has been working with us and gaining valuable experience since early January. In that time Tom has shown great initiative in his work, and proven himself to be a team player by joining our young lawyers brainstorming innovative ways in which to improve efficiency in our offices - this in turn will result in great value to our clients 👌

Congratulations Tom!!

Harmans is pleased to announce that as from 1 February 2020 Mark Sherry has been appointed as the firm’s new Managing Partner. He will replace Graeme Riach who has been at the helm for the past nine years. During that period Graeme has led the firm through some challenging times post-earthquake including retrieval of our IT equipment, files and deeds from the old city office, over-seeing the Papanui premises fit-out and successfully navigating Harmans back to its roots with the re-opening of our new Central City office. Graeme is looking forward to devoting more of his time to his civil and commercial litigation practice along with an increasing workload from his Law Society Council role.

Mark joined Harmans in 1995 as a graduate lawyer, and became a partner in 2002. He is a leader of our large commercial and property team, specialising in most areas of commercial law including franchising, commercial conveyancing, property development, leasing matters and business sales and purchases. He brings a wealth of experience to his new role including management, finance, strategy and policy. Mark will expand his duties and oversee the management of the firm while continuing to develop strategy and growth at Board level. He will, of course, continue to take care of his clients with the same high level of service.

Please join us in congratulating Mark.

Better late than never!!

We are now settled in after re-opening new Central City offices and are delighted to introduce you to two of our latest graduate solicitors, Charlie Robson and Lewis Gibson, who were admitted to the bar in late 2019.

Charlie is working in our highly experienced and successful Family Law team based in the City, and Lewis in our very busy Private Client and Property Law team based in Papanui.

Both have hit the ground running and are proving to be assets for our firm and clients. For more information, visit our website www.harmans.co.nz

WE’RE BACK!

We are excited to announce that as from Monday 30 September 2019 Harmans is back in town!

We will be operating from two locations – our existing Papanui office and a new Central City office.

The city office is on the 2nd floor of the Westpac Building (79-81 Cashel Street) which is right on the corner by the Bridge of Remembrance. The location could not be better for the firm with close proximity to the Court, central banks and other professionals – not to mention a plethora of nearby cafes and restaurants for those all-important lunchtime meetings!

Our family law and litigation teams and some of our commercial lawyers will be located in the central city office with our private client, property, trust and estate teams remaining in Papanui giving easy access and ample car parking for clients in those matters.

Having had a central city office since 1888 when the firm was first established (until the earthquakes occurred) it is great to be re-connecting with the city centre and re-establishing our presence in Christchurch’s developing heart.

A worthy initiative from two of our Harmans crew which is rapidly gaining momentum – arranging the production and delivery of knitted teddy bears for premature babies and others needing a little support…well done ladies!

Can you knit? Michelle & Sue at Harmans Lawyers would love your help donating some of these cute little fellas to the Neonatal and Children's wards at Christchurch Hospital. You can find the pattern in the comments. Drop off is at their offices, 485 Papanui Road.
