Financial support for businesses

Has COVID-19 prevented you from going to work? The Short-Term Absence Payment is now available 💰

The STAP is available through Work and Income, to employers for employees, and self-employed workers, who:
• need to miss work to stay at home while waiting on a COVID-19 test result, and
• cannot work from home.

The STAP is a one-off payment of $350.

Over the holiday period the McCoy & Co office will close 12pm on the 23rd December 2020 and reopen 8.30am on the 13th January 2021.


💰 Reminder and update! Legislation was recently passed that temporarily increases the low-value asset threshold for depreciation from $500 to $5,000.

This will allow you to deduct the full cost of your business assets with a value of less than $5,000 in the year they purchased them - for a short time until 16 March 2021.

This is instead of having to spread the cost over the life of the asset. For assets purchased on or after 17 March 2021, this threshold will be permanently increased from $500 to $1,000.

Yesterday the Government made an update to the Small Business Cashflow (Loan) Scheme:

🔵 The Interest free period is extended to 2 years and now can be used on capital expenditure in addition to operating costs

🔵 Inland Revenue unilaterally changing the terms and conditions of new and existing loan contracts

Applications for the loan can now be made until 31 December 2023.

Labour’s recent Tax Policy announcement is indicating an increase in the top personal tax rate to 39% for earnings over $180,000 p.a. 💰

Between the year 2000 – 2009 was the last time we had this top tax bracket and there was some notable tax planning during that time i.e. Penny & Hooper.

With company and trust tax rates remaining at their current levels, expect Inland Revenue to be on the lookout.

Regardless of the election outcome now is the opportunity to review the structure of your entities, dividend policies and tax planning.

Did you know Xero has updated their Starter Plan? These changes are automatic for existing customers and there are some great deals for new sign ups✨

• They’ve removed the bank reconciliation limit, so you and your clients can keep a really close eye on money coming in and going out
• The invoice limit has been increased to 20 per month, that’s roughly one invoice for each business day in a month

The first two events in our Spring Software Series have been hugely successful with our attendees finding a lot of value in these free presentations.
